Villawood protest off to a good start at Holsworthy Army Barracks 14-4-06

Villawood protests got off to an excellent start as protesters marched on the Holsworthy Army Barracks where 160 Villawood detainees had been moved.

Protesters chanted "relocate Vanstone, not refugees".

More on Villawood

More detail:

People banged on the gates and made the points about: the government being scared of the protest movement if they've had to relocate refugees out of Villawood; the fact that Holsworthy Army Barracks also has an asbestos problem but that we would be prepared to take refugees into our homes so they could be safe; that we will always come back again and again, no matter where they try to detain refugees; that the federal government's policy is based on cruelty and lies... and much more...

People are camping overnight tonight. Tomorrow the main rally will be at Villawood from 10.30am with a festival in the early afternoon. Sunday is yet to be finalised but almost certainly includes an action at Kirrabilli House.

I should have mentioned also that the cops and security today said that we could send a delegation in to visit the detainees at Holsworthy after the protest was over. When we tried to take up their offer, they refused! Scumbags. Just goes to show they truly are scared to let anyone see what goes on behind closed doors.
