Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has come under fire over a planned meeting with Australian singer Missy Higgins in New York.
Mr
Rudd is in the city for three days to address the United Nations
General Assembly and for meetings on the global financial crisis.
The Opposition says he should not have gone.
Independent
Senator Nick Xenophon has questioned why the Prime Minister is meeting
with Higgins, who is also an anti-poverty campaigner.
"I
haven't yet met with the PM, but the PM is meeting a number of
important people in New York, including Missy Higgins," he said.
"I don't think the media understands the important, the significant role that Missy Higgins plays in the Senate," he joked.
"If I had a choice between meeting Missy Higgins or me I'd rather meet Missy Higgins," Mr Xenophon added.
Meanwhile,
Nationals' Senate leader Barnaby Joyce says key figures like US
Treasury secretary Hank Paulson just won't have time to meet with Mr
Rudd.
"He is a very busy man at the moment, and I think Mr Rudd
will probably get more time with Missy Higgins than with Mr Paulson,"
he said.
UPDATE: The Prime Minister's office says he is not planning to meet Higgins.
