Illicit drugs costing Australian business billions in sales$$$

Because and old report has found illicit drugs are costing Australian businesses because less people are buying alcohol and cigarettes. But alcohol and cigarettes are costing the community a lot more, because of the community having to pay for absenteeism, road accidents, domestic violence, police, prisons, hospitals and the morgue.

Illicit drugs costing Australian business billions in sales$$$

Now a new report says the governments (ADRF) Australian Drug [Anti Elicit?] Law Reform has found illicit drugs are costing Australian businesses $3.3 billion a year.

But the report failed or did not seem to find, (according to John Howard's ABC), just how much say, compared to legal drugs, are elicit drugs costing the community, and Australia's, 'mind your own businesses', [community]?

The report, commissioned by the Australian Drug Law Reform Foundation (ADRF), factored in the effects of crime, absenteeism and even road accidents. [But not legal drugs?]

Report author, Professor David Collins from Macquarie University, says much of the cost is eventually passed on to consumers by businesses.

But not the 'cost' or 'lost revenue sales' of alcohol? That could have been passed on to taxpayers if they didn't take illicit drugs? And not the cost of absenteeism and even road accidents by taking legal drugs?

And certainly not the cost to taxpayers if the alcohol and cigarettes caused more problems with domestic violence, police, prisons, hospitals and the morgue.

Well some people would argue that legal drugs cause more problems for the community especially if people take into account the 'statistics'.

David Collins: "They probably do pass them on in terms of higher prices or lower wages, so somewhere along the line someone is bearing the costs that were initially borne by business," he said.

The ADRF thinks companies should take the issue more seriously and put pressure on governments to revisit their drug policies.

Notice he said 'drug' policies' this time and not illicit drug policies?

Perhaps next time he can draw some balanced conclusions by looking at drugs per se and not targeting anti tax benefits for the government who is killing you with legal drugs, sales and taxes?

Because and old report has found illicit drugs are costing Australian businesses because less people are buying alcohol and cigarettes. But alcohol and cigarettes are costing the community a lot more, because of the community having to pay for absenteeism, road accidents, domestic violence, police, prisons, hospitals and the morgue.

Study reveals meth plague among young Aussies, but not an alcohol plague?

New statistics on drug use show Australians are the biggest users of ecstasy and methamphetamines in the English-speaking world.

But what about amongst the biggest drinkers in the english speaking world?

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report says one in five Australians aged in their 20s has tried methamphetamines.

But the community says just about every Australian aged in their 20s has tried alcohol.

Australia is ahead in tackling smoking, with the fourth lowest rate in the developed world.

Since 1985, the number of daily smokers has reduced by 40 per cent.

But the number of drinkers has gone up!

Sorcere: http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200704/s1895029.htm

So what about the smoking and drinking plague?

Bad luck about the alcohol? How do we rate? Smoking cigaretts kills more people than all those drugs put together. Perhaps if we deal with the real plague amongst young Aussies then we can deal with the rest? So we need to start with corporatocracy first!

Prohibition - Nothing Has Changed

Taken from various websites with my comments.

WEBSITE: In the late seventeenth century, the Reverend Increase Mather, probably the most influential Puritan minister of his time, said that alcohol was "a good creature of God" and that man should partake of the gift without abusing it. His son, being a little more concerned about drinking, encouraged people to set a good example by not getting drunk. (which is still drug abuse, so they were really saying the same thing).

Police in our community and responsible ethanol drug dealing?

Considering that the Drug Ethanol is a proven cancer causer, and that we sent (one month ago) ethanol and cancer information to Cr. Rod McKelvey, so that he could address this important issue, we find it quite insulting that no mention has been made when it comes to this drug and cancer, or about psychosis, schizophrenia, dementia, diabetes, central nervous system damage, organ damage, neuro-toxic poisoning, alcoholic hepatitis, pellagra, foetal alcohol syndrome, anti-social personality disorder, amygdaloid syndrome (to lose control of one’s rage response) etc. etc. etc. There wasn’t even a mention, anywhere, that ethanol was a DRUG! The drug dealers didn’t mention it; the police didn’t mention it; our drug Advocate - who printed the article - certainly didn’t mention it. Why should they? They get their money by advertising and advocating the drug ethanol.

Researcher welcomes 'ice' crackdown

A Western Australian drug researcher has welcomed a new Federal Government campaign aimed at cracking down on the manufacture and use of methamphetamines, or 'ice'.

Prime Minister John Howard has given $150 million to a rehabilitation, education and prevention campaign.

Mr Howard says a third of the funds will help an Australian Federal Police (AFP) squad track methamphetamine manufacturers here and overseas.

Methamphetamine use in WA has steadied over the past few years, but addicts are still putting pressure on police and health services.

Professor Steve Allsop from the National Drug Research Institute at Curtin University says health services are under pressure dealing with people under the influence of 'ice' while police are busy shutting down clandestine drug labs.

He says he is happy the Government is investing in treatment and education programs.

"We do need to improve access to treatment, we do need to ensure that people are well informed about the risks, because many people do underestimate the risks and we need to ensure that health and law enforcement services are working in concert," he said.

Professor Allsop says it is important to tackle the problem at several levels.

"What we need to do is reduce the number of people who commence using, prevent people taking it in the first place and have better access to treatment services so people who are emeshed can get the best possible help at the earliest possible opportunity," he said.

whats costing money...

I'll tell you whats costing money. Keeping some drugs illegal is costing users more than it should.

If I was allowed to grow cannabis I would. It would make a good addition to my garden, being a nitrogen fixer and all. Instead I have to fork out hundreds of dollars just for an ounce of the stuff. And I have to contribute to global warming by driving somewhere to pick it up.

The whole policy on drugs is ass-backward. It's discrimintory and oppressive, and the politicians know it. In this 'war on drugs' I consider all Liberal and Labor elected officials war criminals.

Alcohol damages women's brains faster than men: study

The brain-damaging effects of alcohol strike women more quickly than men, a new study says.

Female alcoholics performed worse on a number of tests of neurocognitive function compared with males, Dr Barbara Flannery from RTI International in the US and her colleagues found.

However, Dr Flannery cautioned the findings are not good news for alcohol-dependent men.

"Women are vulnerable to the extent to which they will experience the negative consequences of alcohol abuse and alcoholism more rapidly than men, but men will also experience it - the same kinds of effects," she said.

Other physiological effects of alcoholism, such as heart and liver damage, are known to occur more quickly in women than in men, a phenomenon known as "telescoping," Dr Flannery and her team note in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.

To determine whether the same occurs in the brain, they had 78 alcoholic men and 24 alcoholic women, between the ages of 18 and 40, complete a series of brain function tests.

Sixty-eight non-alcoholic men and women also took part in the study as a control group.

The duration of alcohol use was significantly longer for men than women, at about 15 and 11 years, respectively, as was the duration of alcohol dependence, at eight and five years.

A greater percentage of men were college-educated and employed full-time.

However, women reported binge drinking significantly more often than men, at 91 per cent versus 72 per cent.

Before completing the tests, all of the alcoholics had abstained from alcohol for three to four weeks.

Compared with the alcoholic men, the researchers found that alcoholic women performed worse on tests of visual working memory, cognitive flexibility, and spatial planning and problem solving.

Dr Flannery pointed out that women metabolise alcohol differently than men do.

A woman will experience the alcohol effects faster than a man of the same weight.

One reason is that men have more water in their bodies, which better dilutes alcohol's effects.

Women may also have less of an enzyme that converts alcohol into an inactive substance.

"I think it's important that women understand this," she said and that it was also important to remember that alcoholism is under-diagnosed in men and women.

She added more studies should be done in different populations to confirm the results.
