Activists have entered Shoalwater Bay Training Area

Several groups of pacifists entered the Shoalwater Bay Training Area in order to disrupt the Talisman Sbre miitary exercise.

Talisman Sabre, involving US and Australian troops, begins its field component today.

A statement from the groups reads:

"We are a group of people concerned about pece and our environment.

"Our consciences will not allow us to stand by while troops prepare for more war. We do not want to see this environment destroyed or exploited for these purposes.

"We plan to stay inside the training area for as long as possible."

Talisman Sabre is the largest joint military exercise hosted by Australia. 20,000 US troops are participating in this exercise which takes place in numerous training areas and support sites throughout Queensland, the Northern Territory and surrounding seas.

Hundreds of people from around the country have gathered in Yeppoon as part of a Peace Convergence opposing the Talisman Sabre military exercise. Further nonviolent actions have been planned for the week.

Solidairty with Resisters and the People of Iraq

Great action.

While our friends are inside disruptng this exercise, the U.S. is launching a major offensive in Iraq see http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070619/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq

The Bush surge is on in Iraq and the fighting, slaying, killing and dying will be escalating in the coming daze.

If you are in Brisbane and wish to express soidarity with the resisters at Shoalwater and those under fire in Iraq a good place for a vigil would be the Watermark Hotel 551 Wickham Terrace. This morning there were officers from the U.S. Navt, Marines and a guy in a fly boy overalls .

ACTION ALERT: 7 lives are at risk as War Games continue

Action Alert: Stop the Talisman Sabre war games & secure the safety of the Shoalwater 7

Contact Minister of Defence, Brendon Nelson and Commander of the Australian Defence Forces at Shoalwater Bay, Major General Ash to demand that

** no further military activity takes place at the Shoalwater Bay Training Area and

** the safety of seven peace activists currently inside the military exclusion zone is secured.

From June 19 to July 2, US and Australian troops are engaging in war tactics including live firing and high explosive bombings at Shoalwater Bay as part of the joint military exercise Talisman Sabre. Yesterday morning seven peace activists entered the military training area with the intention of remaining inside the base in order to stop these ‘war games’. (Footage of their action is available on the Peace Convergence website.)

The group has stated: “Our consciences will not allow us to stand by while troops prepare for more war. Nor do we want to see this environment destroyed or exploited.”

One of the activists, 66 year old grandmother June Norman, decided to take this action saying that: "War is not a Game. I feel for the children of Iraq who are being killed by the actions of the US and our military. The military has upped the ante with these exercises so I have to up my own personal ante in opposing them on behalf of the children in Iraq.

Commander of the Australian Defence Forces at Shoalwater Bay, Major General Ash Power has stated that he didn’t believe that the seven were in the training area despite video footage of the activists entering the base. The military intend to continue with operations as scheduled.

Media Alert - For Immediate Release

Pacifists Penetrate Military Perimeter at Shoalwater Bay

Five Christian pacifists have entered the Shoalwater Military Training Area today to raise their concerns about and stop the Talisman Sabre live military exercises taking place over the next two weeks.

Simon Reeves (26 yrs Melbourne – Social Worker), Simon Moyle (30 yrs Melbourne – Baptist Minister), Krystal Spencer (21yrs Melbourne Support Worker) and Carol Powell (53yrs Brisbane – Nurse (Registered), Sarah Williams (23 yrs Melbourne - Student) release the following statement:

“Imagining Peace”

We plan to enter the base to disrupt these military exercise with our presence. We do so openly and honestly, without deception, and while actively seeking out military personnel with whom to dialogue.

We are five nonviolent Christian people who, like the prophet Isaiah, are working towards the day when people will beat swords into ploughshares and study war no more. As followers of the nonviolent Jesus, we cannot stand by while our country plans the destruction of our brothers and sisters in other countries and the environment here at Shoalwater Bay.

We do not take these actions lightly, but with an awareness that the gravity of our actions pales in comparison to the crimes of the Australian and US militaries this week. The destruction of pristine wilderness, with unique and endangered wildlife is unacceptable, as is the increased reliance on violent methods of conflict resolution. We take these actions because all other legal attempts to stop the exercises have failed.

People are likely to say that we have no respect for the law, however, this is not so. Rather, we say, with Martin Luther King Jr. and in accordance with the principles of nonviolence, “I submit that an individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law.”

We believe that practicing for war only means more war. That is why we must imagine peace, embody peace, practice peace.

Another world is possible: that is why we act. (end statement)

More information about the action will be released when available.
