Good Stuff

The exercise in Queensland is a cover for the dumping of heavy metal waste. Yanks have been kicked out of Japan and Cuba for abuse of covenants governing the disbursement of radioactive waste. The type spread by armour piercing munitions Bunker busters, shells which burn at 5000 degrees Celsius and leave a contaminant grey powder like substance which blows on the wind. My own Doctor looked surprised when I told him, most citizens have NO idea. Yet we can all access enough information on the subject of Depleted Uranium DU, if we cared enough. And so can our elected reps at all three levels of government, who are perceived as partners in this treachery!

Vigil Report - Staying Awake, Traditions of Spiritulaity and Act

The Enoggera anti-war vigil has been a weekly event since Easter. It is a direct appeal to soldiers at Enoggera Base to refuse to deploy to the U..S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.  It makes the point that invading Iraq and Afghanistan has nothing to do with defending Australia - the primary pitch in military recruitment. We also ask soldiers to make contact with U.S. veterans against the Iraq War www.ivaw.org
Like most of those who have taken nonviolent direct action at Shoalwater this past week, we are from  radical faith based (christian pacifist) traditions. C a vigil regular is presently inside Shoalwater with a christian affinity group. Along with Madonna, she has been influenced by the spirituality and activism of Franciscan desert spiritulaity which emerged out of the nonviolent resistance at the Nevada nuclear test site http://www.freewebs.com/juswhe/johndearinmelb.html Daniel whose family held the solo vigil while three U.S. warships recently visited Brisbane would come from a more Gandhian tradition. The rest of us Sean, Ciaron, Brendan, Jim, Jimmy, Damien, Sr Kay, Lisa have emerged from experiments with the north american Catholic Worker tradition www.catholicworker.org and the plowshares movement www.plowsharesactions.org Although deeply rooted in our traditions of spitrituality and activism we are joined by local activists like S a regular at the vigil.
We draw upon the sacraments and traditions of our ancient tradition. To vigil is to remain awake while society slumbers to danger. This is the situation at Enoggera where troops are deploying directly to Iraq. There seems to be a watertight reality bubble inhabited by military personnel and their families involved in the bloody drama imposed on the Iraq people, with surrounding society largely immune and oblivious.  The passionate responses to our presence and decision to voluntarily enter the drama (a uniformed soldier passes every minute while we vigil) include screams and gestures of rage, parents and partners holding up photos of family presently deployed as they drive by.
Our crew have long histories with nonviolent resistance to warmaking. We have traveled together in nonviolent resistance to wars on East Timor, West Papua, Iraq, Afghanistan, Ireland, Central America  et al Jim was recently found guilty for the Pine Gap civilian inspection www.pinegap6.org Ciaron has returned form Ireland where he was acquitted for the nonviolent disarmament of a U.S. war plane en route to Iraq www.peaceontrial.com

The anti-war movement is alive and well!

Great to see some opposition to the war. Congratulations to the Pine Gap 6, to the folk who travelled all the way to Rockhampton to resist the talisman sabre war practice and to those holding their weekly vigil against the war at Enoggera. More of us need to join in to show Howard and his bosses in Washington and big oil that we are serious about stopping their violent, immoral ways.

To the Australian soldiers deployed or waiting to be deployed, Iraq and Afghanistan are war crimes. This is not fighting for your country. You are being used by Bush and Howard as mercenaries to protect the interests of big oil companies. Resist, refuse, live with a clear conscience.
