Re: Is it appropriate

These games should only be held in countries certified by the US and the CIA as free from oppression of national minorities and religious minorities like newly democratic Iraq and amerika itself. Call in blackwater or even UN peacmakers to sort these Chinese outon tibet. So democracy and professional sport can be truly free!

Re: Is it appropriate

Why should the americans get to decide? The oplimpic were started in Athens in Greese, its their event and if anyone should stop china from holding the games its them or the UN(who attepmt to represent everone, as apposed to the americans who dont really care).

CIA? the CIA has no right to interfere with the games! it has nothing to do with them. the cia oppress more than anyone in iraq(currently). they have 'secret footage' and secrets which they wont tell their own people.

If your going to ban chine from the olympics then please ban america as well, niether of them are free.

Re: Is it appropriate in light of recent events in Tibet to hold

I was amused by the response of one of the NZ swim team to questions about the idea of boycotting the beijing olympics.  He said it would be pretty hypocritical after not having made a fuss about the games being held in Australia.

Re: Is it appropriate in light of recent events in Tibet to hold

I really hope your amusement at his comment came with some  knowledge of modern australian history as per Prof Henry Reynolds right up to current federal and stace government policy of keeping indigenous communities as the poorest of the poor in ' land ownership, health facilities, housing, education, and all the inclusions that are normal in any suburb.

Cause he is dead on target with that comment, Australia is currently murdering innocents in their own homes in their own countries for no other reason than to create a false sense of safety under the shelter of the terrorist of the world... We may be more suttle at home.. but at home we don't need to show off eh?

wat were u thinking wen u put that on it has nuthin to do with tibet

All Countries Have Some Degree of HR Abuse and Corruption

My opinion is that it does not matter what country hosts the olympics, but activists must not be stifled or targeted simply to create an impression that there are no issues which may or may not be embarrassing to some officials. See WhistleBlowers' Documents Exposed site http://wbde.org

There are varying amounts of corruption and human rights abuse going on in all countries. Who objects to these issues being paraded and exhibited?

If the activism occurs on the front verandah of a country, and its officials and politicians which to crush this public peaceful demonstration - bad luck!

Free speech must be protected.

A country with little or no corruption can survive a public demo or 2. And covering up just breeds a growing, rotten, sick, stench which will not go away.

Re: Is it appropriate in light of recent events in Tibet to hold

may be it is more appropriate to ask the question as:
is the recent events in Tibet a riot or a normal protest?
how would our government response to it, if a protesters burn down properties and killed innocent people?
are we spoiling "spoiled kids" by closing our eyes to the action as long as they are deem to be protesting from Chinese rules?
Freedom is a unheard -of under Dalai Lama when he ruled Xizhang Province(Tibet). Talk about culture genocide, I think that it is fair to blame US for it. Go to visit China if one cares, it is a culture genocide to chinese culture in a massive scale by US western culture. What is a big deal about it?

yes

podcast?

is anyone podcasting the protest. I want to see the tantrums live.

Re: WHAT TIME SPAN?

WHAT TIME SPAN is it for a country to be considered appropriate to hold the Olympic Games? from when it was doing an act that is considered an abuse of human rights. Obviously it didn't count for Australia in 2000, is that because the abuse is ongoing as part of it's " way of life". Every country has it's own issues that get up it's citizens noses, if you have a close look. Olympic games is just the head in the sand pretence that everything is ok. "If you're in the club" Remember the USA boys club.. boycott USSR olympics? He he...... the usa? they are the most war mongering invading disgusting country on earth since the great " colonizers" that 'they" are the result of. We listen to them don't we? And so you pick on CHINA... weird mate.

Re: Is it appropriate to hold the Olympic Games in Beijing?

It is only inappropriate to hold the Olympics in China if there is extremely strong evidence that the athletes will be targetted and are therefore unsafe. If the athletes and the integrity of the even can be safely maintained then China should be able to retain the honours. As for all of those people likening China's treatment of Tibetians to Australia's treatment of Aborigines - get your information right. No, we don't have a treaty with Australia's traditional owners, and yes, maybe we should. But the Government has been spending the money in an attempt to assist Indigenous communities. It is a two-way street - it is the Governments' problem, but it is also up to people in those Indigenous communities to begin to take some responsibility for their own lives and well-being. Call me short-sighted, but if Indigenous Australian's living in cities can make a life for themselves as well as white Australian's living in cities, then Indigenous Australian's living in the outback should be able to make a life for themselves in much the same way that white Australian's living in the outback have. They have been handed the resources for years but have failed to utilise them in the most effectual manner. I feel that it is time for the Government to listen to, and implement the ideas of Aboriginal leaders to help remove the 'gap'. While the current situation is not ideal, to liken it to Tibet and China's relationship of utter war-like violence is just way off the mark.

Re: Is it appropriate to hold the Olympic Games in Beijing?

The also get to vote, get freedom of speech and religion and don't get shot for trying to leave the country.

Its the little things that make the difference.

How many Aboriginal Australians have been accepted as refugees in china?
