Re: Should we celebrate Australia Day?
Is that the "White' Australia colonialist victory, or robbery ,celebration day?
Treaty first with reparations then we can discuss an "Australia day" between equal peoples.
Re: Should we celebrate Australia Day?
The arrival of the first fleet is also only of direct relevance to New South Wales and
not to the rest of the country. I think 26th January is the wrong day to celebrate.
Re: Should we celebrate Australia Day?
I cant believe some of the questions being asked on this, an Indymedia site. Surely we all accept the designation of Jan 26 as Invasion Day. Leave the Australia day questions for the tabloid press.
S/he can't believe some of the questions being asked here
You are such a dickhead. Polls generate discussion and thought. Do you
want Sydney Indymedia to be confined to the five or six regulars here?
Polls bring in new readers. (It's a shame they can't vote). I don't see
you - whoever you are - thinking up good topics for polls and posting
them! If you think you can do better, why not have a go, instead of
criticizing everyone else.
Re: S/he can't believe some of the questions being asked here
Incorrect. This sort of question is clearly more right-wing than most of the posters on most of the Indymedia sites Im familiar with. It is the sort of nationalist crap you might expect to read in the Herald sun. Why give any nationalist an opportunity to say" yes, i believe we should celebrate australia day". And why would we want to bring in new readers, if those readers are the flag wearing idiots from cronulla?
The way you frame the question influences the debate. I reserve the right to be critical without feeling like ive got to take on the burden of running the site. however, my suggestion? "How can we build the invasion day gatherings to be as big and effective as possible?"
freedom of speech is only for lefties??
is that why abortion cant be debated on sydney indy??
Because
What made you bring up that topic?! It can't, because people can't
debate the topic without getting completely undone. All you get is
people posting vile vitriol and it achieves nothing. People hold
certain points of view and they will not budge from those points of
view. There are plenty of other forums where you can discuss this with
like-minded people and if anyone wants information on the topic, the
internet is a marvellous source.
Stupid is as stupid does
Thank goodness you unreasonable people are in a tiny minority and
always will be. If you had your way, only a handful of people would
ever visit Sydney Indymedia as the vast majority of people would be
offended by your views. And then no-one would ever be enlightened by
reading a different point of view.
Re: Should we celebrate Australia Day?
Yeah! It is my birthday as well. My birthday is a holiday always for Australians!
Never
That makes 3 negatives so why are there none listed in your poll?
How exactly do you vote anyway?
They read but don't vote!
The voting form is on the front page of Sydney Indymedia:
http://sydney.indymedia.org.au/
Hundreds of people always read these polls and no more than about 5 vote!
Thanks

Re: Should we celebrate Australia Day?
I went to the front page but ??
I could not see anywhere you can put a vote in ?
Must be my stupidity ?
Why one can't vote
I am not sure. Maybe someone else can answer this question.
Re: Why one can't vote
i think it's something to do with the custom hack we put in to anonymize the IP addresses. I think only anonymous users cannot see the form.
Why do you have polls when no-one can vote?
262 people have read this poll and only a handful have voted because if we are not a member of Sydney Indymedia we can't vote and apparently there are only 8 of you that can vote! I am not going to join Sydney Indymedia because I have noticed previously there is a 'track' feature where Big Brother could quickly see where your interests lie and in that way pin down who you are in no time. Once they have figured out who you are they have every article and comment you have written at their fingertips - they don't even have to search for them.
So how about making it possible for 'outsiders' to vote. I visit here at least once every day and have made dozens of comments and I can't vote.
Re: Why do you have polls when no-one can vote?
sorry about the lack of functionality. It is on my todo list to fix.
Every Monday
Every Monday won't offend anyone and who wouldn't be happy with a long weekend.
Sorry Day
A very sorry day indeed.
A new poll is needed
How about if some of youse whingers who never approve of the polls make up a poll to replace this one? Let's see what kind of marvellous poll you can come up with, dickheads.
Re: Should we celebrate Australia Day?
Dates are important. It is one way that we can come to terms with our past and acknowlege what at times is the terrible historical legacy that still has an impact today in Australia. For all those reasons January 26th sould not be a holiday.
If we are to choose a date that has some meaning to all Australians I would suggest May 1. Not for the obvious reasons (although that might not be a bad thing) but because there is an important Australian connection.
In 1946 the strike by Aboriginal station workers in the Pilbara started. It was the first significant strike by Aboriginal workers that challenged the racist system that oppressed them. The workers involved were paid little more than a pittance plus poor quality food and accomdation. It was one of the longest strikes in Australian history-3 years. In fact many of the strikers never returned to work but moved to establish their own independent communities. The strikers received considerable support from left-wing unions. It shows that we can build a movement that can unite all workers around common interests. The strike was in effect the birth of the modern Aboriginal movement. If we are to have a national day then May 1st may be the best one.
