A fine bunch of galahs
I don't think any of them are much chop, so I voted for the first. Can I have a prize for making a poll with the greatest number of choices?
Earle Christmas Grafton Page
What a shocker of a name. Born on Christmas Day 1880 in Grafton. Going through the WW1 records on the National Archives, I see it was very common for parents of boys born in Grafton to give them that middle name. But Christmas?! I see John Howard hasn't picked up the Donkey Vote as yet.
Ben Chifley
Because my grandfather knew him and always spoke highly of him.
Re: Ben Chifley
Ben Chifley sent the troops in to the NSW coal mines during the 1949 Australian coal strike, which was used as a precedent by the Menzies, Holt, Fraser and Hawke Governments for use of the military to intervene in industrial disputes. He may have been a nice guy, but he played cold war politics hard that denigrated the labour movement - he lost the election too.
John Curtin died at The Lodge
John Curtin was the only P.M. to have been in gaol, as an anti-conscriptionist in 1916. He was one of the three P.M.s to die in office (the others were Holt and Lyons) and he was the only one to die at The Lodge, on 5th July 1945.
This election could turn funny if Rudd dies of a sudden stroke (quite common after an aortic valve replacement) caused by all the kerfuffle and we find Julia Gillard is PM. And if Howard is returned, we could find ourselves with Costello instead.
Re: Who do you consider Australia's greatest Prime minister?
Andrew Fisher - for refusing to give Comonwealth assistance to the conservative Queensland Government in suppressing the 1912 Brisbane General Strike. In fact he gave a personal donation to the strike committee.
Gough Whitlam. For having a checklist of progressive social reforms and daring to try to implement them with a hostile senate in two terms over just 3 years in office. He isn't a saint tho - just remember the Indonesian invasion of East Timor.
John Curtin. For withdrawing the 6th and 7th Infantry divisions from North Africa back to the defence of Australia in 1942, and not letting Churchill divert these troops to Burma. A definitive break with the British Empire and adjusting Australia as part of the Asia Pacific basin.
Re: Who do you consider Australia's greatest Prime minister?
My favourite PM in Public School was allways Alfred Deakin(Though I still to this day can't remember why?)
But I must say, My absolute favourite is the "one term wonder" Gough Whitlam. We have been blessed with so many great PM's, but none I believe was more socially progressive as he was in his agenda. He achieved more in that one term of office than some PM's achieved in their whole political career. I admire his courage in the face of adversity, and his talent and flair for public speaking. Though no person is without fault, I don't view his leadership(or the person) through rose tinted glasses. But I admire various qualities in the man. He's my favourite PM above all others and allways will be.
= strange? Paul Keating hasn't gotten a vote yet? = But we mostly remember him for being quick-witted and his ability to tear apart his opponent's
"I'm gonna do you slowly" __ Paul to john Howard, Lol
As an aside, It's hard to choose a favourite PM(without any bias however small or great) but My Fav. Liberal PM was John Gorton
