THE CATHOLIC WORKER MOVEMENT CONTINUES TO OPPOSE WAR; STATEMENT URGES U.S. CATHOLIC BISHOPS TO ACT

At the conclusion of the 75th Anniversary Gathering of the Catholic
Worker movement, held in Worcester, Massachusetts from July 9 – 12
http://www.pieandcoffee.org/cw2008/ , Catholic Workers from across the
United States and from Germany issued a statement responding to
unending war, ecological destruction and economic collapse; calling
the leadership of the church to speak out now; and urging their church
and nation to join them in personal, political and spiritual actions.

Over 500 Catholic Workers attended the gathering, the largest in these
times, hosted by Ss. Francis & Therese Catholic Worker and the Mustard
Seed Catholic Worker communities. The Catholic Worker was founded by
Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin in 1933, in the depths of the Great
Depression, as a Gospel-based response to the needs of those times.
The Catholic Worker vision lives on in over 200 communities worldwide.

The statement urges the leadership of the church, "now and without
evasion, to break its silence and to wield the authority provided by
the nonviolent gospel of Jesus Christ, by calling the entire nation to
repent for the war crimes we have committed in the so-called War on
Terror."

CATHOLIC WORKER 75th ANNIVERSARY STATEMENT
[Full text version]

We are Catholic Workers from communities throughout the U.S. and
Europe who have come to Worcester, Massachusetts to celebrate the 75th
anniversary of the Catholic Worker. At this critical point in history,
as we face unending war, including U.S. plans to attack Iran,
ecological destruction and economic collapse, we call on our church
and nation to join us in repenting our affronts to God.

The U.S. has become the wealthiest nation on earth at the price of the
collective loss of our souls through our acceptance of the sins of
war, torture, racism, discrimination, killing, nuclearism and
environmental destruction - - all in the name of profit. We live a
lifestyle that demands war and distracts from our true calling of
loving and caring for one another.

We urge our church to heed the nonviolent example of Dorothy Day and
the critique of modern war by Vatican II. Taking God's command "Thou
shalt not kill" and the Sermon on the Mount as our Christian
manifesto, we commit ourselves to upholding the sacredness of all life
wherever it is threatened. We recommit ourselves to the Catholic
Worker vision of creating a new society in the shell of the old.

Saint Paul tells us that when one member of our community is
suffering, the health of the whole body is affected. In our various
communities we have daily contact with the victims of our society,
including homeless veterans and our undocumented sisters and brothers.
Many of us have been arrested and jailed for nonviolent acts of
resistance to state-sanctioned injustice and killing. We strive to do
the works of mercy and to follow Jesus' command to be nonviolent
witnesses for peace and justice.

We once again implore the leadership of the Catholic Church in the
United States, now and without evasion, to break its silence and to
wield the authority provided by the nonviolent gospel of Jesus Christ,
by calling the entire nation to repent for the war crimes we have
committed in the so-called War on Terror.

We yearn to be part of a church that prays and works for peace, loves
our neighbors and enemies alike, and embraces the redemptive power of
forgiveness. We cry out for a church that speaks without fear of
consequences, including loss of revenue. We implore our church
leadership to follow the example of Jesus and unequivocally renounce
the sins of our empire's warmaking, the possession and use of weapons
of mass destruction, oppression, scapegoating and aspirations of
global domination.

When our body issued its last national plea in 2006, the response was
profoundly disappointing and no less than tragic. Rather than a clear
pronouncement condemning the illegal and immoral nature of our current
wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as the evil wrought by torture
and other crimes against humanity, the U.S. Catholic Bishops merely
stated that "our nation's military forces should remain in Iraq only
as long as their presence contributes to a responsible transition."

The insufficiency of this response has been demonstrated, not only by
the continuation of these wars in the face of a clear public desire to
end the war in Iraq, but also by the reality of US covert actions
aimed at destabilizing Iran and the apparently imminent military
attack on that nation.

Out of our shared and abiding love, we remind the Bishops that we
continue to wait for their clear call to our nation to end these
threats and provocations that carry no other outcome than an
ever-widening sea of agony and death. In this prayer we invoke the
spirit and witness of Blessed Franz Jagerstatter who exemplified
Christ's instruction to peacemakers that, as children of God, we may
be required to give up our lives rather than participate in evil.

In the name of God, who calls us to love and not to kill, we appeal to
the church and all people of good will to:

• Call for prayer, fasting, vigils and nonviolent civil resistance to
immediately end the U.S. military occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

• Advise all soldiers to refuse to participate in these wars.

• Denounce and actively resist U.S. plans to attack Iran.

• Embrace the nonviolent witness of Blessed Franz Jagerstatter and
actively support and encourage all conscientious objectors.

• Urge Congress and the military to offer appropriate care and
support to returning soldiers.

• Call for an immediate end to the use of torture.

• Call for the closing of Guantanamo and other secret U.S. military prisons.

• Call for the redirection of our resources from war making and
exploitation to meeting human needs and preserving life on Earth.

• Call for an equitable redistribution of resources and
simplification of our materialistic lifestyle.

• Call for disarmament and the abolition of all weapons of mass destruction.

We call on our church to be a prophetic voice, a sanctuary, and a
source of encouragement to those who want to work in community toward
peace, justice and reconciliation.

Re: 500 Catholic Workers

yes, well its good to see some actual "left"
radical and progressive good people tolerated in the catholic church.

But unfortunately they insist on promoting catholicism ,a most heirachial form of christianity where democracy is not practiced but ONLY submission to the SEXIST AUTHORITY of the Pope.
This churches  internal male dominated unmarried clergy is continualy abusing its powers over those placed under their authority including women and children practices protected by the church even while in public proclaiming its opposition.

A religion ,that In practice historicalyhas  allied with the state since constantine, for say 1600 years and in the present, that has been proved to so too in its practice itv is a church that serves the propertied rich and the ruling classes.

Its bishops and cardinals(e.G. spellman) have blessed many unjust wars internationaly and still actively supports imperialist class war against the poor especialy in the third world.

Its solution to social problems is simply protecting propertied interests while encouraging "charity" handouts .

This Church is A proven failure at social change even when state power is in their hands in predominately catholic societies.

one need only mention the PRACTICE in Phillipines a predominately catholic society where pwerfull cardinals like Sinn have weilded great power.

So,ONE WORD oN REAL WORLD PRACTICE :

PHILLIPINES.

Its a waste of time urging reason on people who choose to accept on faith whatever the pope tells them is dogma.
And not the actual real world CHURCH PRACTice of proclaiming the perfect as ideal but that suffering is good for the soul anyway.

Response "I think you maybe at the wrong meeting/wrong thread!"

To paraphrase Bill Hicks, I think you've found yourself at the wrong meeting (or on the wrong thread in this case).  The anti-Catholic bigotry thread is over on NotoPope, maybe soon to reinvent itself as NototheDaliaLama, NotoArchbishopofCanterbury if they think there's some free capitalist media spotlight to surf by playing roles as extras in an event.

"yes, well its good to see some actual "left"
radical and progressive good people tolerated in the catholic church."

In my long experience the church folks have a better record in practise on tolerance (not a bad value) than the secular left.  Let's face it a collection of lapsed WASP's protesting multiracial/multicultural Catholics (defnition "universal") from 170 countries was never going to be a good look in such a segregated city as Sydney, universally notorious for it  whiteboy racist beach riot recently.

"But unfortunately they insist on promoting catholicism" ,

My participation on this site over the past weeks has not been to promote Catholicism but to defend the right of Catholics to assemble in Sydney. As mentioned on the other thread this right was denied in Derry by British forces shooting 14 unarmed Catholics and by Australian trained Indonesian troops when the massacred 200+ at a Catholic funeral in Dili (other examples are endless).

"a most heirachial form of christianity where democracy is not practiced but ONLY submission to the SEXIST AUTHORITY of the Pope.
This churches  internal male dominated unmarried clergy is continualy abusing its powers over those placed under their authority including women and children practices protected by the church even while in public proclaiming its opposition."

Say it three times and believe it. I find going to mass an extremely feminie experience. The church is a billion strong and full of dynamic debate and action. Being threatened by a bunch of PC liberals does not help the Catholic radicals in these debates.  For example, I haven spent/wasted my time and energy defending the right of Catholics to assemble than participate in these internal debates over the past weeks.

"A religion ,that In practice historicalyhas  allied with the state since constantine, for say 1600 years and in the present, that has been proved to so too in its practice itv is a church that serves the propertied rich and the ruling classes."

Also a chuch that has provided the most militant nonviolent resistance within the United States since the Vietnam War . faithbased direct actionists that have a longer shelf life than most secular dire actionists. For all its faults the Catholic church remains the church of the poor.

 - the secular left don't.

"Its bishops and cardinals(e.G. spellman) have blessed many unjust wars internationaly and still actively supports imperialist class war against the poor especialy in the third world.

Its solution to social problems is simply protecting propertied interests while encouraging "charity" handouts" .

Practisng the acts of mercy, the foundation of the Catholic Worker, is direct action. Even St. Vincent de Paul "when you give to the poor, first apologise for having more than your fair share"...is pretty rad.

There are radical Bishops and cardinals like Arn, Camara etc but the further up any hierarchy you go the less room there is for your conscience to flex.  This is a significant reason that Bishops and Cardinals are rarely canonised as saints in the Catholic tradiition.

"This Church is A proven failure at social change even when state power is in their hands in predominately catholic societies."

Would you like to quote some left successes with state power in their hands....ANC, Mugabe, Fretlin, Stalin??????

Jesus rejected the demands of the crowd to sieze state power as a means ushering in the kingdom, the Church.  The church always betrays the kingdom of god when it embraces state power.  The church is only relevant in so much it facilitates the coming of the Jesus kingdom

"one need only mention the PRACTICE in Phillipines a predominately catholic society where pwerfull cardinals like Sinn have weilded great power.

So,ONE WORD oN REAL WORLD PRACTICE :

PHILLIPINES. "

The radical church/basic christian community movement was the mainstay of social movements in the Phillipines. The moderate Church brought down Marcos. Do you really know anything about the Phillipnes, seems not.

"Its a waste of time urging reason on people who choose to accept on faith whatever the pope tells them is dogma."

You seem to be as ignorant of Catholicism as you are the Phillipines here.

"And not the actual real world CHURCH PRACTice of proclaiming the perfect as ideal but that suffering is good for the soul anyway."

Human suffering abounds.  As a first world white boy or girl you have the option of pushing your share of suffering on the third. Your choice.  If you confront the imperial state, you will suffer. Whether this is redemptive or not depends a lot on you.

"p.S for thVose posing as poor persecuted irish catholics read a little on Cardinal Roger Mahoney. etc"

....wow sounds like we're dealing with one angry wasp here

This post was about the Catholic Worker, you're comment has nothing to do with the post.  The Catholic Worker in Los Angeles http://lacatholicworker.org/ has served the homeless of the skid row area for over 25 years and has a long history of prophetically confronting the Cardinal.

It's been an interesting relatonship of creative tension.  Following the arrest of Catholic Workers blockading the Cardinal's groundbreaking for the new expensive unnecessary Cathedral, Catholic Workers were summoned to the chancery.  The Cardinal railed at them and at one point lost it - stating Catholic Workers are not Catholicin the big "C" o rlittle "c".  After calming down the Cardinal came to celebrate mass at the Catholic Worker soup kitchen on the corner of 6th. and Gladyss, skid row.  This is our church with all its faults and glory - full of conservatives, liberals, radicals, prophets, contemplatives, working class and bureaucrats.  Just leave us alone, don't deny us our right to assemble and debate and we'll sort out our problems. Its a voluntary organisation, don't like it? don't join it!
Born into it, don't like it, leave it.

The pope is the teaching authority of our tradition.

The bishops are there to keep this wonderfu pluralistic universal herd/phenomenon together.

The Catholic Worker is one of the prophetic manifestations of the church and one of the oldest anarchist movements in North America, comforting the afflicted and afflicting the comfortablefor over 75 years.

The Catholic Worker

Thanks Ciaron, and stick around - I don't want to be lonely here!

Re: The Catholic Worker

one can   never be alone with god.

so chin up and soldier on for the lord!

Re: 500 Catholic Workers ,Bishops on Chrurch & the Wars!

1.yes, well its good to see some actual "left"
radical and progressive good people tolerated in the catholic church.

2.But unfortunately they insist on promoting catholicism .

1. Actualy i think the catholic workers are pretty good individuals ,another  small force helping to fight imperialism militarism and oppression and that helps to unite the poor and people while trying to to live meaningful socialy usefull  lives.much unity can be built around that .

more effective catholic worker organisations on ther whole would be a very good thing.

2.its this that 1 am disagreeing with whereby its all its good works and current aims as listed above are seen as catholic church charity .
