Candle Light Vigil for Tibet

Last Wednesday 9th of April, a Candle Light Vigil was held in Martin Place
amphitheatre in support of Tibetan communities in Australia and around the world abroad.
At 6pm supporters of a free Tibet
lined the stage and amphitheatre holding candles as city workers and passers by
also stopped to watch and support the event.

Around 200 people had gathered to show their personal support for those
killed in the latest violence surrounding the Chinese occupation of Tibet.
Supporters held candles and also the stage of the theatre was lined with them
in remembrance of those who were killed in the violence. The surrounding area
was decorated with flags representing free peoples of the nations around the
world.

The Vigil consisted of prayers by all involved to restore peace to the Tibet and its peoples and to end the Chinese
occupation of Tibet.

Speakers included both Buddhist and Christian representatives alike who
called on Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to put pressure on the Chinese Government
during his visit to China by
calling for an end to the Chinese occupation of Tibet.

Vigil organisers called for
the Chinese Government to enter into an open dialogue with the spiritual leader
of the Tibetan peoples, the Dali Lama. The Vigil coincided with Kevin Rudd's
visit to Beijing.
