Community Radio sucks Corporate cash
Sydney's Youth Community radio station FBi is fast becoming
the venue of choice for corporate alcohol companies.
This supposedly “community”
station now has three major booze companies on air and on their website.
Smirnoff, Tooheys Extra Dry
and Jack Daniels are the current cash cows for FBi and they are now doubt
mighty pleased to have access to the stations teen and young adult demographic.
But isn't community radio
supposed to be providing an alternative to the mainstream? (You can't get more
mainstream than Tooheys)
Isn't “community” radio
supposed to be non-corporate?
Isn't it supposed to be
backing small and medium local business instead of giants like Tooheys and Lion
Nathan brewers?
Don't people turn to
non-profit community stations to get some relief from the relentless consumer
world of commercial radio?
And quite apart from the
corporate aspect shouldn't community radio avoid promoting clearly harmful
products?
In Australia there
are more than 3000 deaths and serious injuries every year, which are directly
related to alcohol use.
In recent years there's been
pressure on major sporting codes to avoid the promotion of alcohol. Several
health experts say sporting heroes should be better role models and steer clear
of pushing alcohol on young audiences.
Shouldn't FBi also become a
better role model for its youth audience?
FBi desperately wants to be
cool but getting into to bed with awful multinationals like these is simply not
cool.
Smirnoff, Tooheys and Jack
Daniels should fuck off!

Re: Community Radio sucks my patience
On my radio program you can by free "brainwash", for tough and mild brain stupor, you can drink cyanide, eat yellowcake, and generally have a good time of not being on community radio having to advertise shit, speak shit, and having to fulfill some kinda unspoken expectation. If I want a sleeping pill, and can't make it to the pharmacy, I tune into community radio - sectarian - untogether - dyslexic - hogwash - bore myself to death - radio
Can you do any worse with, or without selling drugs ?

Yellow Cake Recipe, c. 1935
Great to see Yellow Cake is still popular. Everyone should avoid boxes of cake mix and make it from scratch. So much cheaper and nicer too. This is a great one for the backyard chook owner, or the Centreflunk recipient who can scale the fence of a chook owner. Always carry a non-transparent bag or you'll get caught.
* 1 1/2cups butter (room temp)
* 2 1/2cups sugar ( I like to use raw sugar in this one)
* 5 eggs
* 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
* 3 cups SR flour
* 1/4 tsp salt
* 1 cup milk
Directions
* With wooden spoon, cream butter and sugar quickly until light and fluffy.
* In separate bowl, whisk together flour and salt.
*While stirring, add eggs, one at a time, to the butter mixture, making sure each egg is mixed in before adding the next.
*Mix in vanilla, or any other flavouring you want (almond, orange, lemon, rose water).
*Add flour mixture and milk to the other ingredients, alternating the two, starting with the flour. (1/3 flour, then 1/3 milk...etc.)
*Pour into your cakepan which has been sprayed with non-stick.
*Bake in a moderate oven for about 35 minutes, until the middle is firm (bounces back when you press it), the top is golden, and the sides pull slightly away from the pan. A toothpick should come out clean.
Pyewacket's Yellow Cake. Note that this cake was made in 1997 and it has nowhere near reached its half-life. This makes it an ideal cake for those on the breadline.
Re: Community Radio sucks Corporate cash
Bloody wowzers.
Exactly how many piss head bogon, meat head rugby jocks and alcoholics do you think are going to tune in to a tiny community radio station playing an eclectic mix of non mainstream tunes?
fbi's demographic is not down a scruffy murphies shoving glasses in peoples face.
If you plan on undermining the tiny and relatively insignificant underground music scene in Sydney then we will be left with nothing but beer barns and the RSLs to drink at, just the place to drink your self retarded and get your face smashed in.
Music connoisseurs are not the ones out their smashing peoples faces in, its pissed westies that wouldn't listen to fbi if it was the last station on the planet.
Having a beer and catching a band never hurt anyone.
Isn't it supposed to be backing small and medium local business instead of giants like Tooheys and Lion Nathan brewers?
You pulled that out your ass, there is nothing that says community stations can only play ad's by companies smaller then X.
Stop blaming our social ills on red herrings. We dont need a nany state of wowzers and dogooders.
PS I dont even like the indy stuff on fbi or drink Tooheys.
Re: Community Radio sucks Corporate cash
Oh I see...it's only people in the Western suburbs that have problems with alcohol.
Apparently only the "cultured" inner city people listen to FBi and they never ever have drunken fights that result in serious injuries or death.
No that only happens to westies. Those 3000 alcohol related deaths each year all happen to the west of Leichhardt, don't you know darling.
The superior inner city people never have car accidents after drinking too much. that only happens to bogans.
GET OVER YOURSELF you superior fuckwit.
Re: Community Radio sucks Corporate cash
Last time i checked scruffy murphys was in the CBD.
If you think you are just as likely to get smashed in the face or run over at a small indy music venue as you are at a beer barn for westie bogons out on the crawl then you probably really don't have a clue.
Apparently only the "cultured" inner city people listen to FBi and they never ever have drunken fights
I wouldn't say "never" and "only" but if you can cough up anything that says indy, dub or electronica music ppl are even remotely as violent as your average footy bogon out on the piss then i'll get back in my box.
Re: Community Radio sucks Corporate cash
Maybe FBI should have ads for McDonalds, Coke and KFC as well.
Sadly, the line between commercial radio and alternative, independent media is getting thinner.
Re: Community Radio sucks Corporate cash
It's not just FBI. 2SER has ads for the very boring "Tooheys Uncharted" band comp.
Re: Community Radio sucks Corporate cash
as if fuckin tooheys really cares about helping struggling new bands.
its just a bullshit PR strategy to reach young people who dont listen to 2day fm.
Re: Community Radio sucks Corporate cash
Yep. Chuck it all away for a few $$$.
The issue is not particular companies its about an ethos.
CR is meant to be independent, locally controlled, provide an alternative and sustainable.
If FBi take a few corporate $$$ but remain true to their charter and their community, great.
But taking money to promote grog ... have to think more about that.
As a former 'westie' my self (now not in Sydney) and having worked at pubs across the city, my experience was that pissed people are pissed people regardless of where they come from or drink at. Pott's Pointers chunder just as hard as Rooty Hillers and fight just a dirty.
Re: Community Radio sucks Corporate cash
Those Tooheys people have been busy spending $$$$ in community radio land....They're even on the Radio Adelaide website!

Good article anon#1, wrong anon#2, good one anon#3 etc
As the son of the son of an alcoholic and a teetotal a few years now (dry July or whatever) this is a good article. Quite right to raise the issue of corporate legal drug pushers. You should see the big dollars going into full page adverts in News Corp press, but not just there.
Of course it's about induction of youth into a lifelong habit. That's business.
As for the tone of several posts by anon#2 or was it 3 s/he sure has got an anger thing going on there. Could say all the same things without the aggro. Which is exactly the point really about dependence on social drugs - it puts you off your balance and objectivity without even realising it's crept up on you.
When advertising wasn't so good at the mind f*ck with their Phd driven imagery, timing, nuance, PR psychoanalysis then sure I wouldn't care too much. Free choice and all that. But give the big corporates and their huge paypackets and desperate captured academics grovelling for research dollars their due credit.
They know how to make you want to buy their dumb products. That won't make you witty, good looking, or successful but it will make you poorer and probably a lower mood than when you first reached for the bottle, and so on, and so on, imperceptibly down the the staircase to the basement. 20 years on and you'll start wondering how you got so fat after all those adverts of beautiful people .... or even worse. Meanwhile you and whole lot of other little people and working class types will have made a handful of executives real rich ... all the while knowing it was you suckers that paid for their holiday home, and their ski trip to Aspen every year!
