Hazelwood Power Station Shut down

This morning the air in the La Trobe Valley was cleaner
as the oldest and dirtiest monster of the Valley, Hazelwood, was shut
down with two people locking onto a conveyer belt for four hours. The
two lock-ons, and a third person who stayed for support, have been told
they will be summonsed with trespass.

Bar the confiscation of a video camera the interaction
with police was respectful with those arrested released quickly from
Morwell station. One of the search and rescue officers even offering to
give welding skillshares...

Today's action at Hazelwood continues on from similar
actions at Collie power station, yesterday, and at Bayswater on
Saturday. These actions are a wave building across the continent over
the course of the next year as the coal industry shuts down in
Australia.

As one of the dirtiest power stations in the
Industralised world Hazelwood should be first to go. In 2005 the Steve
Bracks thought otherwise, ignoring the plan to decommissioned it 2009
for environmental concerns, by extend the life of it to 2030,
committing another 445 million tonnes of carbon dioxide into the
world's atmosphere.

It's the same across the country with another five coal
fired power stations planned or being built in Australia, including the
HRL plant in the La Trobe Valley.

But all's not black. Another world is possible. Another world is happening.

By taking direct action against
infrastructure we break the illusion of corporate control of our
environments, creating space for community solutions for change.

Workers and unions, community and environmental groups can work together to create clean industries and re-localised economies.

It is criticial that in moving on
from coal no one gets left behind; clean renewable based industries
should provide new livelihoods after coal for those working in the
Industries.

Renewable energy co-operatives and relocalisation initiatives can thrive.

We need ensure that electricity
production is run by those who are interested in our long term futures,
not those blinded by short term profits. We need to take our power back
from privatised industry. This is our future, this is our
responsibility, together we should take action.
