Live Earth Hour Conspiracy

The sun freely produces vast more energy than humanity will ever need, we don't need to conserve energy, we need to free energy.

Re: Earth Hour Conspiracy
I read about the 'Earth Hour' in a Melbourne AGE lift-out whereby the
gumpafied masses were encouraged to turn their lights off for an hour
to save the planet.
It was an excellent media vehicle, printed on recycle grade [bless 'em]
paper to advertise 'green' products like hybrid cars, curly light bulbs
and...umm cotton undies [?]
You know? 100% Australian grown cotton? Those 100% Aussie flood
irrigated then shipped off to China for processing and to be sewn into
the shape of Australian butts undies! WTF happened to hemp hour?
Anyway, like I reckon, a green media vehicle to advertise. And not very
well thought out. What if you had flouro's? It would take more energy
to switch them back on again then to just leave them on for an hour.
Next week they will be back to the fashionable glossy advertorial weekend lift-outs we all know and love.

Is this correct? I heard that this is just myth, but I don't know for sure.
Re: Earth Hour Conspiracy
I think it is 15 minutes. But if you had a double flouro it could add
up to half an hour. Or if you had a whole office floor full of them I
guess it all adds up.
Re: Earth Hour Conspiracy
I was told it was something like 7 seconds.
How does it all 'add up'? If you leave the light off for more than 7 seconds (or whatever the time is) then turn it back on again, you've saved energy. Or am I missing something?
Re: Earth Hour Conspiracy
The 15-minute rule for fluorescent bulbs has nothing to do with saving energy (kind of like Earth Hour). It has to do with the economics of the bulbs themselves. Starting a fluorescent bulb uses a negligible amount of power, but it takes a non-negligible amount off the usable lifespan of the bulb, due to wear and tear on the electrodes. So somebody once calculated, based on their current electrical rates and prices of fluorescent bulbs, that turning the bulb off for less than 15 minutes is more expensive (in replacement bulbs) than leaving it on (in electricity costs).
Re: Live Earth Hour Conspiracy
I declare my solidarity with turning my solar panels off for one hour.
Re: Live Earth Hour Conspiracy
What a load of "silliness" I read. Whilst you lot are sticking your heads in the sands some people who actually do care are trying to get the facts. Whilst these facts are not yet ALL there, some facts are becoming more real and more reasonable. Learn some of them here http://www.lightpollution.org.uk
I also guess that many will argue for the status quo and do nothing. But then it will be JTL. What is needed is the understanding to make the future sustainable JIT. We do not want the 24 hour day to kill off Life On Earth. At least I don't.
ps I really liked Wollongong when I was there. A real neat place and nice beaches.
