Qantas 767 from Darwin Lands at 350 kph
I was travelling to Sydney on QF829 this morning from Darwin to Sydney. The take-off seemed odd with the plane levelling out at what seemed way too soon. The flight was OK but coming in to land, the screen was left on showing the plane's speed. Everyone was talking about how we were coming in too fast. The landing speed for the 767 is 200kph or less, depending on weight being carried. The plane landed with a big bump, too close to the end of the runway. The speed shown on the screen was 350kph. People took up the brace position as it bounced along the tarmac with the wings nearly hitting the ground. Everyone thought we would crash. We were thrown forward in our seats as the plane hit the ground. The noise of the reversed engines was shocking. The plane ended up at the end of the runway way too close to the ocean. The pilot did a violent U-turn to get back to the terminal. He started to chat about the weather but his voice sounded panicked. There was definitely something wrong with the plane - either before landing, or having been damaged during the landing- as QF411 to Melbourne was cancelled.
The 767 has had several problems including mechanical problems with the wing flaps. Wing flap support structures have fallen off in the past. In 2001 a whole fleet of 767s were grounded. It was a Boeing 767 that was involved in the Egypt plane disaster. On another occasion the thrust reverser accidentally deployed during flight. The same aircraft skidded off the runway in Istanbul.
This year's accident in Indonesia where a 734 came in too fast could have been repeated in Sydney this morning.
Here is a database on 767 crashes:
http://www.airdisaster.com/cgi-bin/aircraft_detail.cgi?aircraft=Boeing+767
Problems resulting in crashes have included faults in the thrust reverser isolation valves.
This incident will not be reported in the Ten News, that's for certain.

Indeed. But it probably WILL be reported by www.crikey.com.au .

Like they can keep it a secret. Why with this the only passenger or witness on the ground to say anything?

Another Qantas jet makes hasty landing
Qantas flight makes hasty landing
February 26, 2008 08:33am
A
QANTAS jumbo jet was given priority clearance to land at Sydney airport
ahead of other aircraft after an odour was detected in the cockpit.
Qantas
said the Boeing 747, flight QF566 from Perth to Sydney, gained
clearance to land early last night after it "developed an odour in the
cockpit on approach to Sydney".
"The flight crew responded in accordance with their training and
notified Sydney air traffic control that they would require priority
clearance to land," the company said.
The plane landed without incident and the 374 passengers on board disembarked normally, Qantas said.
The incident has been reported to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) and the airline is investigating.
Smoke pours from Qantas 737 at Brisbane Airport 28/2/08
Smoke could be seen coming from the landing gear of a Qantas 737as it landed at Brisbane airport this morning.
The flight from Townsville, carrying 129 passengers, landed about 7.40am and caused some concern when smoke could be seen.
Initial investigations suggest hydraulic fluid may have leaked onto the plane's wheels and created smoke when the plane touched down, a Qantas spokesman said.
Passengers were kept on board for about 10 minutes while the plane waited on a taxiway to be towed to the terminal, a Brisbane Airport Corporation spokeswoman said.
However the plane was eventually able to use its own power to move to the terminal. No one was injured in the incident.
Qantas?
What's going on? Aren't they checking their planes thoroughly? This is a worry. I am flying Qantas next week.
QF849 from Darwin Cancelled, 6pm today
I can't believe this, I just got a call from Qantas at 6pm here in Darwin, my flight QF849 which was supposed to leave at 0040 has been delayed due to a fault. I have not been told by how long it is delayed and I suspect I will not get in to Sydney before tomorrow afternoon. They said to come in at 0140 instead - how am I supposed to stay awake until 0140?! - and they will call again if there are further delays - which I suspect there will be. Looks like a long sleepless night for nothing. I was surfing the net and found this - I am nervous, I can tell you. I may see if I can switch to Virgin.
A bit of a worry
As a former licenced engineer who worked for Qantas I was saddened each time management came to us about ways to meet world best practises. The idea was to use third world countries standards for maintenance and then American standards for the wages of executives. The fact that we haven't had a major crash in so long doesn't make us any where near the top for world's best practises. Even Qantas has had analysts study the cost of losing a plane. What a shame. I have now left the industry with no intention of returning.
3/3/2008 Qantas emergency landing in India
An engine failed in a Qantas 747 and the plane had to make an emergency
landing in New Delhi. Passengers have been stranded for 6 hours. Get
your act together Qantas.
Complaints to Qantas online waste of time
After spending some time writing out my complaint to Qantas online
about purchasing my ticket online, getting a ticket by email and then
finding the ticket didn't exist with 30 minutes to takeoff, I got this

Passengers scream as takeoff abandoned, Boeing 747
25/3/2008
Passengers on a Qantas flight from Los Angeles were terrified as takeoff was abandoned and three tyres blew out.
A warning light had come on in the cockpit.

Yet another Qantas incident
13th May 2008, another Qantas incident!
A Qantas flight from Sydney to Canberra has been aborted after the plane blew two tyres during take-off.
Qantas said flight QF805 was aborted at 6pm (AEST) on Tuesday as it began to take off from Sydney Airport.
All 92 passengers on board were booked on other flights leaving for Canberra.
"The (Qantas) flight crew acted in accordance with their training," a Qantas spokeswoman said.
"The incident has been referred to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau."
Re: Qantas 767 from Darwin Lands at 350 kph
The original post in this thread is absolute crap. How do I know? I fly 'em.
The anonymous fool who wrote this only makes himself look really, really stupid and ignorant.
First, the 767 lands at approximately 140 knots, depending upon weight. Thats 280km/h. At 200 km/h it would stall and fall out of the sky. IT NEEDS TO LAND FAST! The PES - Passenger Entertainment System - is operated by a GPS with a delay in displaying correct information. The punters down the back have only a general idea what the aircraft is doing in terms of airspeed / altitude etc. On landing due to the delay you will NOT have accurate info. Nor might I add do you need it.
Next - the 767 can be difficult to land, and sometimes it can be "abrupt". The reversers are supposed to be loud. They are what slow the aircraft down! I'm very glad that they did make the noise that they did - thats because they are supposed to.
The fact that the pilot did a U turn at the end of the runway? Yup - would you have preferred he ran off into the water?
Next - QF cancel flights all the time. So what? The plane was definately damaged? How in the hell would you know!
This is a very safe aeroplane operated by a very safe airline. I suggest that Mr Anonymous goes back to doing what he does best - ignorantly mouthing off!
It's a pilot
Great, we have the attention of an actual pilot. Now, could you
please explain in as much excellent detail as above, all these other
incidents with Qantas.
Do you have shares in it?
Re: Qantas 767 from Darwin Lands at 350 kph
Goodness! You do sound a very cross pilot
Re: Qantas 767 from Darwin Lands at 350 kph
Finally someone who knows what they're talking about. Its not unusual at all for a 767 in a landing configuration (gear down flaps 30) coming in at 140+ knots depending on weight. As for the reversers being noisy...I should hope so! I would fly on a Qantas 767 anyday FULL STOP!And no I don't have shares...
QF31 Breaks Down on Runway, towed back
Qantas QF31 to Singapore was on the runway when it broke down and had to be towed back. Furious passengers have waited 24 hours. Meanwhile the toilets on the plane have also malfunctioned. Federal Police were called to the Qantas Club Lounge as angry passengers swore at Qantas staff. Passengers were put up in hotels overnight but had to queue again for customs.
Boeing 747 Makes Emergency Landing in Manila
25th July: Air safety experts are investigating whether an explosion
inside luggage or a broken panel made a hole in a Qantas plane, forcing
it to make an emergency landing in Manila. There have been some reports
of rust in the plane. Rapid decompression in the cabin caused emergency
oxygen masks to appear as passengers believed their time was up. Pilot
Captain Bartels told Philippine aviation authorities he started dumping
fuel on his way to Manila in preparation for the emergency landing.
Flooring gave way, exposing some of the cargo beneath and the ceiling
around the area also collapsed.
Qantas has never lost a jet to an accident.
Emergency Landing for Qantas in Melbourne
29th July 2008: A passenger jet had to make an emergency landing after
an undercarriage door failed to close. The 767-338 was flying from
Melbourne to Adelaide and had to turn around 20 minutes after it took
off. Passengers were transferred to a later Qantas flight but most
chose to fly Virgin. Some passengers were quoted as saying they'd feel
safer on a bus - others said they'd never fly Qantas again.
737 Towed from Runway
A Boeing 737 flying from Sydney was towed from the runway after a
hydraulics failure during a landing on Sunday night. A passenger
claimed a crew member told him they did not feel as safe working for
Qantas because they believed maintenance was being done offshore and
parts were not changed as frequently as they should.
2nd August 2008, hydraulic fluid leak
Qantas has done it again. A 767 bound for Manila began spraying
hydraulic fluid from a steering unit on takeoff from Sydney. The plane
circled over the ocean and dumped fuel before landing back in Sydney 90
minutes later. A senior Qantas pilot who couldn't be named expressed
concern that recent calamities could be the result of Qantas
outsourcing maintenance to Malaysia.
Re: Qantas DOMESTIC
The national airline of Australia, Claytons, has proved yet again that it's the airline you have when you don't have one. Why can't it run according to it's scheduled timetable for departures/arrivals? It's record of delayed flights is appalling, not to mention the resultant inconvenience this brings. Why can't you run your planes on time?
