Re: REQUEST FOR AID TO PEOPLE OF BURMA

After the immediate effects,

With their crops destroyed ,these people will be forced to buy grain on the market at prices that monoploly speculators in food  futures have already doubled this year.

no doubt they will use this disaster as an excuse to bump the prices up even more.

The windfall in increased taxes from these profits of extortion flowing to the australian government  should not be seized by australians in an economy that already has massive surplus.

We woulnt even miss it if this new tax windfall was returmned to its source the worlds poor.

So this is a  great chance to build a campaign to double permanently all australian developement aid to the third world.

The real disaster in australia would be ,if we completely abandoned our humanity and seized this tax bonanza for a new  excuse for consuming more crunchy bars and Mcdonalds while putting 50 cents in the hat and patting ourseves on our humantarian backs and celebating the beauties  of free trade.

Burma to accept cyclone aid from US

Burma's military generals have bowed to a chorus of international pressure, agreeing to allow the US military to fly critical aid to the country's cyclone survivors.

With up to 100,000 feared dead and one million missing, Thailand said it had convinced Burma secretive junta to accept US assistance, almost a week after Cyclone Nargis devastated the country.

Thailand's Supreme Commander Boonsrang Niumpradit said Rangoon had agreed to allow in US planes that have been participating in joint Thai-US military exercises.

"We have helped the Americans to talk to the Myanmar (Burma) government to allow US planes ... to fly humanitarian aid to Myanmar. They just agreed," he said.

A US embassy official confirmed the decision and Boonsrang said the first flights could leave Thailand within a day or two.

"They were very suspicious that the Americans would do more than just distribute relief supplies, but we helped convince the Burmese to allow the Americans in," Boonsrang said.

The decision is a surprise given the huge distrust and acrimony between Burma's generals and Washington, which has imposed tough sanctions to try to end decades of military rule.

However, international pressure had been building on the junta to throw its doors wide open to an international relief operation for the worst cyclone to hit Asia since 1991, when 143,000 people were killed in neighbouring Bangladesh.

Aid has been trickling into one of the world's most isolated and impoverished countries, although experts feared it would be too little to cope with the aftermath of Nargis.

The storm pulverised the Irrawaddy Delta with 190km/h winds followed by a massive tidal wave on Saturday.

Three planes loaded with vital UN emergency supplies for Burma's cyclone victims were delayed on Thursday, awaiting clearance from the military government hours after they were due to land, UN officials said.

"They need assistance today. They needed it yesterday," Tony Banbury, Asia regional director of the UN World Food Program (WFP), said in Bangkok.

"They can't wait and they shouldn't be asked to wait until tomorrow and it's crucial that food, water, shelter and medical supplies need to go in right away."

Another WFP official said the three planes were waiting on tarmacs in Bangkok, Dhaka and Dubai with 38 tonnes of supplies.

The WFP officials said it believed one Thai commercial cargo plane had landed in Burma's main city of Rangoon with seven tonnes of high-energy biscuits.

In a rare move, Burma's Southeast Asian neighbours pressured the junta to unlock its borders to allow aid in.

Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) chief Surin Pitsuwan said the junta needed to work with the international aid community "before it's too late".

"It's very much a matter of urgency," he said.

Surin said regional governments, working through the Jakarta-based ASEAN secretariat, were "trying to communicate (to Burma's regime) the sense of urgency and the flood of goodwill that is being offered".

Member countries of ASEAN - which groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Burma, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam - are generally reluctant to comment on other members' internal affairs, according to the group's closely held principle of non-interference.

WFP spokesman Paul Risley said aid agencies normally expect to fly in experts and supplies within 48 hours of a disaster, but nearly a week after the cyclone, few international relief groups have been able to send reinforcements into Burma.

Witnesses reported that villages were destroyed and people fought for survival by clutching trees as the storm brought walls of water charging inland from the sea.

Reports of cyclone damage in a country that used to be the world's largest rice exporter added to worries about tight global supplies of the grain.

The UN Office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said 5,000 square kilometres of the Irrawaddy delta were under water.

The government insists it has enough rice reserves, although the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation said damage to crops and storage buildings in the delta could mean that Burma will need short-term imports and miss its 2008 export targets.

at last -but 2 DAYS ? how many more children will have died by then  ?????

Too little too late

It is shocking they have waited so long.

Re: REQUEST FOR AID TO PEOPLE OF BURMA

Stop using your religion of gaia for  promoting  politics of armed  invasion of other countries.

This is no different from muslim or Christian fundamentalists propaganda.

We have already seen this kind of political shit in the excuses used by humanitarian imperialism to invade iraq and Afghanistan regime change for  oil interests.

Its difficult to separate your need for patronising  political noise for regime change from its humanitarian content.

What is more important to "Gaia" here the need for urgent aid or political point scoring ?

And such politicking  will only be used by the right as an excuse NOT  to send aid.

Did” gaia “global demand a foreign  army  invasion of America at Katrina cyclone/hurricane  time?

Even the most advanced countries more democratic countries can have difficulties getting their act together quickly in times of natural disasters.

In Americas case it was just pure racism and property interests that held up aid.

Re: REQUEST FOR AID TO PEOPLE OF BURMA

I have had confirmation from the Prime Minister's Office that this letter has been received.

I am just a member of Gaia and started a Global Peace Network there on 07.04.08

where is growing very well.

My primary work site is from the Mitchelton Peace Movement (since 1993)

of which I am the Manager -this is also a Grass roots Movement.

I am not Religious (I am a peaceful spirit) though the team I have been

vigiling with at the Gallipoli Barracks are.

This is about how shockingly disgraceful it is htat the people of Burma

are not yet receiving FOREIGN AID.

Our PEACE-KEEPER'S should go in -we invaded Iraq -yet we cannot go in because

of passports and visa's ?

This is a mockery and these people are sufferring.

Does that make sense -now -to the poor spirited person who made that first reply?

No oil in burma?

Good for your work....dont forget the locals closer to home: the aborigines

Or are they not good enough publicity?

Re: REQUEST FOR AID TO PEOPLE OF BURMA

The attempt to tie the urgent need for aid to that for politicking for regime change is an attempt to create regime change through creating  chaos in the midst of a huge natural disaster for an already hugely  suffering people.

And appears (or the Burmese government might think so) to be linked to an attempt to send in foreign armies from governments known as being hostile to the regime. As in the following paragraph.

 Myanmar courts political disaster
By Brian McCartan

CHIANG MAI, Thailand - With political, economic and social tensions already running high, the devastating impact of Cyclone Nargis and the military government's callous and inadequate response could represent a perfect storm for change among Myanmar's repressed and impoverished population.

http://atimes.com/atimes/Southeast_Asia/JE08Ae01.html

Think it over is not this paragraph encouragement to create regime change thru creating Chaos.

By the way for OIL?

Such efforts by Beijing open the possibility of India being enveloped by a Chinese naval presence from all fronts. However, it is still quite unlikely that India would have resisted international pressure to the extent it has, had it not been for Myanmar's rich natural gas resources. Myanmar's proven gas reserves stood at 19 trillion cubic feet (tcf) at the end of 2006, with vast areas yet unexplored.

http://www.atimes.com/atimes/South_Asia/JD05Df01.html

cut the politicking about sending in australian armed  PEACEKEEPERS as in Iraq timor and elsewhere this is often  cover for seeking control of oil and gas .

no wonder the government in Burma

is slow at giving quick aprovals.

"

Our PEACE-KEEPER'S should go in -we invaded Iraq -yet we cannot go in because of passports and visa's ? "

U.S. aid flight cancelled 8pm Thursday

May 08, 2008 08:04pm

A PLANNED US aid flight to Burma is not going ahead, the US ambassador to Thailand said today, saying it was not clear if there had been a miscommunication or whether the junta withdrew permission.

"I don't know whether they rescinded the decision or if there was a miscommunication,'' US ambassador to Thailand Eric John said.

"There was a miscommunication this morning that they had permission for us to use a C-130.

"Since then, the decision has been taken back by the Burmese authorities.''

Re: Request for Aid for People of Burma

no to the US military ?

well ,pehaps an understandable reaction from a paranoid criminal  military  regime  already subject to sanctions and to all the calls for military intervention ,feeding aid through opponant rebel monks etc and not through aid groups like Oxfam .

its the burmese people who will suffer for all this politicking and calls to create chaos and  rebellion ,regime change ,while the country is in the grip of an enormous natural disaster.

bad as they are the government may feel it is best able to distribute aid without fighting another rebelion stirred up by foreigners at the same time.

The UN has said it would resume aid flights into Burma after a suspension triggered by a tussle with the military regime over two plane loads of goods meant for cyclone survivors.

The junta has refused to allow foreign relief workers to direct the relief effort after the disaster which struck a week ago, drawing condemnation from the United Nations and world leaders who urged the ruling generals to open their doors.

The wrangle with the UN's World Food Program cast further doubt on the regime's claim to be doing all it can to save the 1.5 million people at risk of disease and starvation after last week's devastating storm.

"The World Food Program has decided to send in two relief flights as planned tomorrow, while discussions continue with the government of Burma on the distribution of the food that was flown in today, and not released to WFP," said Nancy Roman, WFP director of public policy and communications.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon on Friday warned that survivors' lives could be at risk if the military leaders refuse international aid.

"If early action is not taken and relief measures put in place, the medium-term effect of this tragedy could be truly catastrophic," Ban told a media conference in Atlanta.

Earlier, the White House welcomed news from Burma that it would accept US emergency aid and said one military cargo carrying supplies would reach the country on Monday.

According to the military government, the death toll is almost 23,000, with another 42,000 missing, but the United States says more than 100,000 could have perished.

The situation on the ground is one of horror almost beyond imagining - with starving survivors picking for food in waterways littered with the bodies of the dead - and aid groups agree time is running out.

The military, deeply suspicious of any outside influence that could dilute the tight control it has kept on the nation for 46 years, insists that it will welcome supplies from abroad, but must distribute them itself.

In a sign of the tensions, a UN source said Ban Ki-moon has not been able to contact directly the head of ruling junta, General Than Shwe, to discuss opening up to the relief effort.

The row with the UN came shortly after the junta, which has a long history of thumbing its nose at the international community, announced in the state-run press that it was "not ready" to allow foreign experts in.

"The international community can best help the victims by donating emergency provisions such as medical supplies, food, clothes, electricity generators, and materials for emergency shelters with financial assistance," it said.

"Burma will wholeheartedly welcome such course of actions. The donors and the international community can be assured that Burma is doing its best."

An Australian Red Cross worker said the Burmese government has been cooperative during the relief process in the disaster-struck country.

Michael Annear, from Melbourne, a regional disaster response coordinator who has been in Burma since Tuesday, spoke to international media via a teleconference call.

Seven Red Cross workers, four of whom are Australian, now have visas to work in Burma, with more expected in coming days.

Authorities have been cooperative with the Burma-based Red Cross workers, Annear said.

Countless masses are suffering in the country's waterlogged southern delta, where huge swaths of terrain remain under water since Cyclone Nargis struck last Saturday, and entire villages were washed or blown away.

"I am angry with the government," said Dowla Shwe, a single mother with five children who said her house was one of the many that simply vanished when the powerful storm tore through her village.

She said the military had brought no aid or food - and that she feared her children would now starve to death.

"If they can't help," she said, "why not allow foreigners to come and help us?"

Aid groups have repeatedly said that foreign experts who specialise in moving aid through disaster zones and assessing which regions need help first are essential to keep more lives from being lost in the tragedy.

"The situation is getting critical," said Noeleen Heyzer, the top UN official for Asia.

"There is only a small window of opportunity if we are to avert the spread of diseases that could multiply the already tragic number of casualties."

Critics of the regime have warned relief organisations that if they do not supervise the aid supplies handed over, they may be snatched by the generals and never reach the victims in Burma, one of the world's poorest nations.

Looking ahead, the UN appealed on Friday for $US187 million ($A198.26 million) to provide aid over six months to Burma.

Despite the catastrophe, however, the generals insist they will hold a constitutional referendum on Saturday, brushing off criticism they are ignoring the plight of victims while devoting resources to the vote.

Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi's party said they should delay the vote, and that it is only intended to tighten the rule of the military that blocked her election win in 1990 - and have detained her most of the time since.

Burma will accept US cyclone aid

BURMA will accept emergency aid from the United States, state television said today, a week after a devastating cyclone, but did not specify how it would be delivered or distributed.

State television made the announcement after a meeting between deputy foreign affairs minister Kyaw Thu and the head of the US embassy in Burma, Shari Villarosa.

"The charge d'affaires of the US embassy gave the offer documents to the deputy foreign affairs minister for providing relief supplies within the coming days," it reported.

"Burma has said that it is going to accept it."

The broadcast rejected "rumours" that military-run Burma was turning away offers of assistance from Western countries, which are deeply critical of its failure to move towards democracy.

"According to the recent policy, Burma does not discriminate towards any country which offers rescue assistance," it said.

However, there was no indication of how the aid would enter the country and who would be responsible for distributing it - a critical issue as the junta is reluctant to allow foreign relief workers in to join the disaster effort.

It has said that it welcomes offers of emergency aid but that it will distribute the goods itself.
However Seven Red Cross aid workers, including four Australians, today received visas to enter cyclone-hit Burma.

Australian Michael Annear, regional disaster response coordinator who has been in Burma since Tuesday, spoke to international media via a teleconference call tonight (AEST).

The US said today it was considering air drops of food and aid supplies and had moved helicopters and C-130 aircraft into position in Thailand.

An official with the US Agency for International Development said that "any and all options" were under consideration, including air drops without the permission of Burma's military government.

But US Defence Secretary Robert Gates said he could not imagine the United States going in without the permission of the government in Rangoon.

The United Nations and other organisations have urged the regime to admit its staff, saying they have the know-how to mount an effective response that could save many lives in the aftermath of the disaster.

Critics of the regime have warned that if the supplies are handed over to the generals, they may be appropriated and never reach cyclone victims in Burma, one of the world's poorest nations.

The United Nations said 1.5 million people are at risk after Cyclone Nargis, which the regime said has killed 23,000 people and left around 42,000 missing. Villarosa previously said the death toll could be about 100,000.

Re: Request for Aid for People of Burma

Rudd in his helpful friendly US ally humanitarian mode says 'kick in the door'.

This is surely making a great impression on the military government.

others say send money via  the  monks already in rebellion , military regime gets sus that along with food aid dropoffs by foreign military air ,that guns might be dropped too at the same time ?

why would they think that ?...Kick in the door?

POLLING stations have opened in parts of cyclone-hit Burma, as the military regime asks voters to approve a new constitution just one week after tens of thousands of people died in the storm.

The military delayed the vote for two weeks in the areas hardest-hit by Cyclone Nargis, including in the main city and former capital of Rangoon.

But the ruling generals pushed ahead with the referendum in other parts of the country, with polling stations in some places open by 6.15am local time (9.45am AEST).

How CAN they do this and stall AID for their DYING?
How CAN the World be dictated to by not only this

Another storm heading for Burma

THE United Nations today warned another storm was headed in the direction of Burma, which could complicate the slow-moving relief efforts from deadly Cyclone Nargis.

An estimated 1.5 million people have been left homeless by the disaster, which has killed tens of thousands, and the storm could pose serious risks to those battling disease, said Richard Horsey, a UN relief spokesman.

"Our meteorological people tell us there's likely to be fairly strong rainfall in the next seven days,'' he said.

"That's going to be a big issue with unpaved roads. Heavy rainfall could complicate things for all those people going without shelter,'' Horsey said.

"If there's an epidemic of water-borne disease and a lack of shelter when a storm comes in ... if we have another storm coming into the delta, that's going to be a significant concern for all those people without shelter.''

The country's military, which has run Burma with an iron fist for almost half a century, said earlier that it welcomed shipments of supplies but was "not ready'' to let in foreign aid workers, including disaster experts.

"If we don't get this relief effort up to full scale quickly, there's significant risk of a second round of this disaster which could potentially kill as many people as the initial cyclone,'' Mr Horsey said.

Re: Request for Aid for People of Burma

“Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard says getting much needed aid to Burma's cyclone victims will take a global effort in putting pressure on the country's junta.

Ms Gillard said on Sunday this stand-off was a “global problem”.

“It requires China, it requires America, it requires all of us to keep pressure on the Burmese to make sure that aid can land, aid can get through to these people who desperately need it,” Ms Gillard told Sky News.

She said Prime Minster Kevin Rudd had been involved in discussions with Australia's allies on putting pressure on Burma.

“We are working with the rest of the world to bring pressure to bear on the Burmese authorities to let this aid get through.””

Re: Request for Aid for People of Burma

UK, US, and France - Bring in Aid Now

The United States, France, and the UK have rightly deployed ships, helicopters, cargo planes, and other life-saving equipment and supplies to the seas and countries neighboring Burma.  Yet, those materials sit by almost completely unused as the Burmese people perish of thirst, hunger, and disease.  These countries have stated that they are waiting for "permission" from China and the Burmese regime.

The UK, US, and France have done the right thing, trying to work through the UN.  They cannot be blamed for the intransigence of Burma's regime and China.

But, now is the time to act. Please send a message to Prime Minister Brown, President Bush, and President Sarkozy calling on them to stop waiting for the Chinese and Burmese regimes' approval and send in relief immediately.

Dear Prime Minister Brown, President Bush, and President Sarkozy

We appeal to you help the millions are people who are at risk in Burma. The Burmese military regime has restricted aid delivery to the point that disease and starvation are imminent. It has been 10 days since the cyclone hit and there has only been a trickle of aid. There are at least 1.5 million people are at risk of dying if massive aid does not go in now. Now is the time to act - You have helicopters, ships and supplies ready and waiting. Stop waiting for China or the Burmese regime's approval and send aid now. The regime has shown that they care little for their people and will do whatever possible to maintain power, even if it means the deaths of hundreds of thousands. The world sat by and watched 800,000 die in Rwanda, we shouldn't stand by now. The Burmese military regime has already destroyed 3200 ethnic minority villages and now they are blocking badly needed aid to cyclone victims. Please deliver aid now!

More than a week after Cyclone Nargis hit Burma, Australia has finally managed to fly 31 tonnes of emergency supplies into the cyclone-ravaged nation.

The delay is due to Burma's ruling military junta's continued rejection of international assistance, which prompted Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to label the repressive regime "callous".

Hollywood Actress Rosanna Arquette Exposes
Burmese Regime's War On Civilians: Tell the World

Dear Friends,

Today is the 15th day of videos we have released about the situation in Burma.  Starring actress Rosanna Arquette, today's video addresses a deadly serious issue -- the Burmese military regime's war on civilians in eastern Burma.
Over the past 12 years, Burma's military regime has destroyed 3,200 villages in eastern Burma -- mostly near the Thailand-Burma border.  The regime has burned down many of the villages, destroying medical clinics, schools, food supplies, and rice fields.  At least 1.5 million Burmese have fled as refugees and internally displaced.  The regime uses rape as a weapon of war against the women in these areas, and  tortured to death many innocent villagers.
The Associated Press and others have compared the military regime's attacks on civilians to the genocide in Darfur.
In other similar situations around the world -- there are only a few on this scale -- the United Nations Security Council has mostly dispatched peacekeepers to protect civilian populations.
Yet, because of China's veto power at the UN Security Council, there is not one single United Nations peacekeeper in eastern Burma to protect the civilians.  Not even one.
We are building a powerful international campaign to help stop the regime's attacks on civilians.

Medical Teams finally allowed into Burma -report from Rangoon

Still so slow ,still not major aid -but at least a little more progress.

How can we have sat back and waited so long ?

We can only hope a precedent is set after this ,so that there is a way

for immediate aid in any future disasters ,where Foriegn Aid is being

resisted.

That way at least those who have died since the Cylcone, through lack

of help ,will NOT have died in vain.

Alexander Downer backs force to get aid to Burma cyclone victims

  • Downer wants debate on military intervention in Burma
  • Association of South-East Asian Nations to run aid effort
  • In pictures - Survivors struggle after Burma cyclone

I hope this does happen -and I hope people understand that is all

I have been trying to get them to do,too.

I have had a lot of adverse comments and false accusations over this appeal ,

but in reality , it IS what should be done.

Re: Request for Aid for People of Burma

FIRST Lady Laura Bush has implored Burma to "let the people of the United States help" with emergency cyclone aid after the military junta barred US navy ships from providing relief supplies.

    http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,23739606-23109,00.html

Perhaps there will be a reponse to the First Lady -as President Bush's attempt

    have not been successful?

It makes sense for the US Navy to go in and as earlier reporte ,they have been

in the area and waiting to help ever since the cyclone hit.

Re: Request for Aid for People of Burma

First UN food helicopter reaches Burma

    17:41 AEST Thu May 22 2008
2 hours 36 minutes ago The first of 10 helicopters contracted by the UN's World Food Program (WFP) has arrived in Burma to help speed relief to remote villages hit by Cyclone Nargis.

Each chopper will be used to ferry supplies from the main city of Rangoon to distant parts of the Irrawaddy Delta, where many villages are inaccessible by road, WFP spokesman Marcus Prior said.

"It's very good news," Prior told AFP.

"We've got barges in Yangon (Rangoon), lots of boats, trucks and now helicopters. We're confident that we'll be able to move what we have."

Nine more helicopters are expected in the coming days, he said.

Poor access, logistical bottle-necks and other problems have beset the relief operation, in addition to a decision by the ruling generals to keep out most foreign disaster experts.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon flew to Rangoon, also known as Yangon, on Thursday to press the regime to accept a full-scale relief operation.

Prior said the WFP has purchased an additional 10,000 tonnes of rice after receiving approval from Burma's government on Wednesday, increasing the food supplies available for desperate survivors of the storm.

The United Nations estimates that only 25 per cent of those in need are receiving international emergency aid.

Despite the military regime's insistence that reports of survivors who are not getting enough aid were the work of "traitors," AFP reporters who have slipped into the hard-hit southern delta have found many without state help.

Re: Request for Aid for People of Burma

    http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,23757924-29277,00.html

As Aid slowly trickles into Burma ,3 WEEKS after the cyclone hits -

latest headlines read that Burma is told to focus on saving lives.

Why was this not done immediatley ,I have to ask and will ALWAYS wonder?

    " i will always wonder"

“Why was not  this done immediately ,I have to ask and will ALWAYS wonder”.

Well you might like to consider , the early  insistence of imperialist Armys to handle any aid distributionwithout any "restrictions."

Backed by waving the right to kick in doors if the military government was to slow in aproving.

Coupled with calls to send money to rebel monks,.

"peace corp" style foreign ngo etc.

Enough to get any military government paranoid about real motives ?

So yes, we will ALWAYS be forced to wonder if ,bad as they are, aid might have got through faster and more effectively by cooperating with and through the military government ,rather than insisting on the "rights" of foreign militaries.

Without all the regime change shit.

53 minutes of unbelievable video footage taken and edited together by Burmese citizens. The first 6 and a half minutes was filmed during Cyclone Nargis, and the rest was filmed in the days following the cyclone. The final 10 minutes are extremely upsetting, so be warned.

I am hoping this video link will work here -it was passed onto me by a friend ,

who has direct contacts in Burma.

Re: Request for Aid for People of Burma

I had hoped to close off this article, with successful news of an all out mission

into Burma. It appears that will not happen now -it has been too long to take affect.

There is some hope now, at least more than there was, and we can all but hope

that never again will there be such human tragedy, delayed and almost ignored,in our

    so called modern world.

I have no doubts at all if this had been an ENGLISH speaking Nation,at the very least,

the loss of human life would have incensed the majority, and protocol would have been

    immediately changed.

I hope those that did not do all they could-Governments and especially the UN,will

never forget, that their lack of action has contributed to the loss of thousand of human lives.

    English speaking nation

I don't know if that would have helped.....what about Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005! The people were left to die - for months!

Yes,that is so true about New Orleans-so how hypocritical was it

Although 200 experts are moving into the Irrawaddy Delta,
they still won't have a full report for another 2 weeks!!

Re: Request for Aid for People of Burma

SIX UN helicopters have been allowed to fly deep into Burma's devastated Irrawaddy Delta, delivering desperately needed supplies to hungry and homeless cyclone survivors, a spokesman said today.
    http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,23839635-401,00.html

At last the UN choppers have gone in -but it should have happened
    immediately after the disaster!!

But I am so pleased that at least I can report this and can hope that no more

lives will be lost due to lack of AID.
