Sydney publisher exploiting journalists?

You'd think that a company that is expanding and publishes three newspapers would be able to pay the people who write the articles.

But you'd be wrong.

The company that publishes City Hub, City News and The Bondi View doesn't pay it's freelance reporters a cent!

After doing work for them several years ago I recently enquired about writing stories and was told I could, but only if I'm prepared to do it for free.

I have also been told that they use lots of student journalists from UTS and Sydney uni and don't pay them.

Isn't this exploitation?

This isn't a non-profit outfit, it's a commercial business. Why can't they pay, even a small fee?

Many student reporters are desperate to get experience but it's wrong to take advantage of them.

This page boasts of the company's huge readership: http://www.alternativemediagroup.com/AboutUs.aspx

So if they have so many readers and advertisers why can't they pay the people who create the content?

Re: Sydney publisher exploiting journalists?

what about drum media, the brag and 3d. do they pay their writers?

or rip them off like city hub.

I set up my own micro news

I thought I was helping build community media there.

But as I much prefer to put my comment in a positive and constructive framework let me simply say I decided to build my own micro news blog which now has about the same or more readers per month as the Sydney City Hub after 13 years. That is about 25,000 per month (in my case at least).

Going since January 2007.

I don't sell advertising though.

And I have only moderate technical savvy.

But I might consider expanding both for the right cooperative partners in such a venture with flat pay structure and equal share of equity in the business. In short a non profit cooperative that pays wages.

The difference is that I'm genuinely interested in a non profit general news service owned and run by local citizens, with a broad focus.
