Vigil for Burma Melbourne
On Tuesday 2nd October approximately 50 residents of the Dandenong Ranges which is located to the East of Melbourne in Australia, gathered in Belgrave for a candle light vigil to show their solidarity with the people of Burma in their struggle for democracy. Each participant lit a candle, Buddhist prayers of peace were spoken as the crowd listened to first had accounts from Burmese Bloggers. The words of Aung Yan Suu Kyi were also shared. A moments silence was observed reflecting on the fallen in people. The role of the Singapore and other regional governments in propping up the regime was also raised
After the ritual of the vigil was completed participants signed letters to be sent to the Burmese Embassy in Australia demanding they respect the human rights of their own people and stop the detentions and killings. Letters were also signed to be sent to Alexander Downer, the Australian Foreign Minister demanding that the Federal Government take stronger action against the Burmese Junta including meaningful sanctions, refusing to cooperate with the junta in any way, summoning the Burmese Ambassador and recognizing the Committee Representing the People Parliament which represents the truly democratically elected Parliament of Burma.
It was a solemn but meaningful gathering where participants were able to share the inspiration offered by the bravery of the people of Burma but also reflect on the grave situation they find themselves in. It was a small gathering which sort to add its small voice to the chorus of humanity who are seeking justice for the Burmese and a more peaceful compassionate world.
