The voice of a migrant
Language a huge problem for migrants.
Few months before I was in Sydney and I asked an old woman for a street. She said me no speak English, Italian. When I said her that I am Greek, Greco, she smiled and said me YOU BROTHER!! She was very good person but her English was extremely bad, although she had many years in Australia. She lived in an area with many Italian migrants.
Some years before a teacher invited a Greek mother of a student from first grade of primary school and told her that her son had hearing problems. The truth was that although he was born in Adelaide he did not understand many English words and not because he was deaf!!!
Few weeks before a customer (I have a small shop with computer, electronic and mobile staff plus full time employee) asked me for a product but I did not understand what she wanted and I said her that I did not have it. After little she found it in my shop!! I said I did not have it because I did not understand what she wanted!!
We (the migrants) have huge problems of cause our poor English and these problems become bigger when we have to communicate with Anglo-Saxons. Our English vocabulary, grammar and syntax are poor. We do not use full phrases but some words or usually we use the main words and we expect from the others to try to understand us!!. When we speak to a non Anglo-Saxon migrant we do not have big problems because the migrants use the language with the same way (add or delete words in our mind until to find the meaning that fit to the general discussion) but when we speak to Anglo Saxons we have a huge problem. They can not understand us and we feel that they do not try to understand us!!!
We (the migrants) use words with a general, wide meaning. It means the meaning of our texts depends on the readers of our texts. It means our texts could be misunderstand very easy and often. It means our texts give the evident, the proves to the migrant’s enemies, the nationalists to fight us!!!
The truth is that our (migrants) texts, our language creates nationalists or push them to extreme. The language, the words are not simple symbols as the symbols of the numbers. The words are connected with the conditions, with the civilization, with the history, with the needs which created them. When a bastard Greek migrant in Australia (he is me!!) use the words with the wrong way then he does not creates only a communication problem but he breaks the words from their history, he weaken the local’s connections with their history, their past, their roots. In really, the wrong use of a language kills it slowly, slowly and creates a new language, a new civilization.
Last years many countries try to protect their language, their civilization from the migrants. USA parliament created new law to protect the English language. In Australia we abandon the word multicultural from the immigration department and we try to block the citizenship of non Anglo Saxon migrants with the new law and exams for citizenship. I understand the worries of the locals for their language and their civilization. While as a Greek migrant in Australia I am a threat for Anglo-Saxon language and civilization, as a Greek I know that these risks exists in my country too from Albanian and other migrants.
While I understand the local’s worries for the migrants I disagree totally with the solution of these worries, with the solution’s direction. We can not move backward, we can not return back to our past, we can not escape from our present, from our responsibilities. We have to choice between our past and our future, between our grandparents and our grandchildren, between the democracy and militarization of our society. We can not convert our countries to a huge detention center for the migrants.
For me the nationalist, the ultra nationalists are the biggest threat on our planet for our planet. For me the transformation of the United Nations to a Federal World Government is a basic necessity.
Encourage the migrants to speak freely, give them voice, help them to express their self, their thoughts, their dreams, their needs. When the locals know the migrants they can build easier the common future, they can promote easier the mutual benefits or at least they can avoid racial cinflicts!!!
For me the biggest problem of cause my poor language is not that I have lost some customers in my shop but because I saw racists, crypto racists, cheap politicians to ignore migrants rights, to violate our rights and we can not answer to them, we can not fight against them of cause our poor language!!
Our (migrants ) biggest problem is that we have no voice of cause our poor English. Many racists, non educated, low IQ persons think that we accept our victimization, that we accept our humiliation, that we agree with them!!!
The truth is that we are not happy from the governments, from politicians from the solutions mainly .on migrants problems and you CAN DETECT OUR DISATISFACTION FROM OUR POLITICAL PARTY’S PREFERENCES. The migrants in any part of the world are more radical, more left than the locals.
When migrants have no voice, in countries with high degree of migrants as Australia, then these countries luck of democracy and the risks for internal, racial conflicts are very high.
Although my English are poor I started to publish my thoughts, my dreams, my hopes, the voice of a migrant!!!

Re: The voice of a migrant
Australia is a white settler state, with a small population that exercises a labour monopoly over the stolen resources of a whole continent.
In a world with 6 1/2 billion people.
It has always jealously guarded that labour and property monopoly over Australia.
Resentment against migrants 'stealing our jobs" is the traditional response to immigrants. As for sympathy for migrant workers problems from white Australia, its always been "speak English you Wog". I shout so you can understand right!
Migrants are often the most left because they are the most exploited and can be put to work doing the 'dirty work".
See amerikkka, where the U$ wouldn't function profitably without imported cheap labour, legalised and illegal doing a lot of the productive work.
Never mind. The problem of migrants "stealing our jobs' in Australia Has now been solved by the introduction of 407 type visas really 'indentured labour" visas.
This is the disguised form of slavery once used for the Kanakas.
Aboriginals being now citizens and officially now 'Australians" too can no longer officialty be employed on 'Black' rates of pay allowing openly colonial super-profits. So a new underclass worker caste is required for obtaining super-profits.
'We will choose who can come to Australia and under what conditions "etc etc.
Most Australian people are not aware of the extent of this indentured labour system but it runs at 70,000 new visas a year plus renewals.
A lot of this is hidden away in the country and in small factories employed by labour contractors etc..
This has ended the need for a real migrant programme except for some family reunion visas and of course they have come under increasing restrictions .
Some white settler 'greens" even justify protecting the labour monopoly in a disguised way, with cries for reducing population.
A more acceptable politically correct face than the Hansenites.
Despite the huge proven beneficial contribution migrants have made to our society.
Thus a two-class system of workers is being created the labour aristocracy of official Australian workers and a "temporary" worker underclass without any of the old rights of migrant labour.
Now what will our labour aristocracy unions for Australian workers do about that?
Why, they will run campaigns to try and stop the worst exploitation by making sure the system operates 'fairly' and is not 'abused" by excesses by the employers.
Migrants are doing the 'dirty work".
Migrants are doing the dirty work, the heavy work, the unhealthy work, the low paid work, the less skilled or unskilled work, the work that can not improve their skills or create any opportunity to improve their position, the work that is less important for the productions needs and comes first for redundancy and last for payroll increase. Migrant’s work is the work for the modern slaves!!!
Migrants are doing the 'dirty work".
I think you are right about that.
to be a migrant is a sin!!!
Labor Aristocracy and migrants
There are various types of labor aristocracy or combinations of them.
1. Most common of labor aristocracy are the labors from developed countries. They have higher wages, better working conditions, higher living standards comparing with the labors from undeveloped countries.
2. Union labor Aristocracy, The members of Trade Unions , not the migrants or people from minorities, especially union representatives and other active members, have better conditions and more chances to improve their position in their workplace.
3. Labor aristocracy of cause their race background. In countries with ethnic minorities or migrants, labors from the dominant race have better working conditions, higher living standards.
The elite of the labor aristocracy comes from the dominant race, from union representatives or active Union members, in developed countries.
Most depressed labors come from ethnic minorities or migrants in undeveloped countries with weak or illegal the Union Movement.
In Australia most depressed labors in their workplace are the migrants and aborigines. A study found that 32% of aborigines and 35% of migrants are victims of race discrimination. Personally I believe that the Muslim migrants are in worst conditions from any other labor in their workplace.
When I became Union representative some employees thought that soon I will become supervisor but I was worried if I will keep my job or what to do a sole parent with three children if I lose my job of cause my Union activities. As you could guest for about 15 years, union member or not, union representative or not, union counselor or not I continue to do the most dirty and unhealthy job in my workplace without any training or any opportunity to improve my position.
TO BE A MIGRANT IS A SIN!!!
When as Union Representative I pressed the Manufacturer Manager for Union member’s rights he gave me a notice, was his resignation from the Union, at the end I found that not only the Manufacturer Manager but also all Supervisors was member of the Union and before, the product manager was in other place Union Representative.
These employees are what I call Union labor aristocracy.

Re: to be a migrant is a sin!!!
Poor migrant workers gain experience of what it means to be exploited proletarian workers. 'Those who have nothing to sell except their own labour' power. Selling their capacity to create wealth for those with capital.
A everyday reality mostly known to the majority of the world's peoples living in the oppressed counties and the third world.
The poor migrants learn from their life the necessity of promoting real internationalism and opposing gender oppression.
They gain some experience of the class realities and the nature of the labour aristocracy in the imperialist heartlands. Its petty bourgeois privilege protecting Unions and its political parties like the ALP =LAP. Labour Aristocracy Party.
I recommend reading 'Imperialism and its class structures" for its insights on the international migrant experience and their exploitation in the imperialist world.
No, Antonis, the problems are not mostly simply a problem of language difficulties but a problem of the lack of the ability by the privileged petty bourgeois labour aristocracy CLASS, to think in the 'language" of the needs of the working class and to act accordingly in class solidarity with the poorer migrant workers.
Just as their class and its unions and the LAP will accept the need for the more "humane" and "reformed" continuation of the indentured labour slavery 407-visa system. Because capital needs its cheap labour preferably without real rights .

The problems are not mostly of language
We (migrants) know that our problems are not caused from our poor language and we can prove it easily.
In an article which I published in Indymedia with the title
“” Union members are the worst racists!!”” there are many names of migrant victims. I have a bigger list of them. From them only two persons have language problems, the other are 2nd generation migrants, they born and went to school here, few of them finished the Adelaide University. They did not have language problems.
The racists do not victimize the migrants of cause their language but because they come from a different race.
Even my problems and luck from any opportunity in my workplace is not caused from my poor English.
In my work, a modern computerized printing company we do not use many English words because the inks, paper, foils etc all named with numbers, not words. For example for the inks PL 1268 or PMS 129 or 428 foil etc. These machines are computerized and their operation is very easy. If you compare me with all the other persons in my work place you will find that I have a big advantage to operate these machines because I spent many hours on computers every day, I build, repair or maintain computers,
I have a shop with computer and electronic staff, I publish many articles on the internet with how to install etc, I fount one of my article to be used in USA university for student’s exercises etc while some employees in my work place have very small relations with computers etc.
I can not understand how all Anglo Saxon very soon learn the job and improve their position and I stuck in the bottom for fifteen years. The truth is that my IQ is higher than the average, about 130 and in normal, logical conditions I had to be from the firsts who will improve their position, .
Government, political parties Trade Unions and Employers implied acceptance the victimization of the non Anglo Saxon employees.
We (migrants) do not ask for solidarity but we require the Government, political parties Trade Union and Employers to undertake their responsibilities and respect and support migrant’s rights and interests.

Re: The voice of a migrant
Marx says most labour in society is 'simple labour".
It is valued on the market as multiples of that simple labour.
Standards of education change so that even word processing ,say is today an average labour skill (but I lack)
Dvision of labour simplifies tasks so that they can become for example a repetitive matter of using the right ink numbers.
Only a minority work with high tech genius stuff ,advancement can simply depend on having the right class attitudes of serving the boss.
The established labour aristocracy is very skillful and experienced in that task.
Re: The voice of a migrant
The labour aristocracy comes from the persons who are very close to employers and Union organisers. These employees are very weak in their job with very low self respect and rhey are ready to do anything the employer or the Union organizers ask them to do. I do not speak for laboratories but for manufactories,. The labour aristocracy comes from cheap and dirty labours. Profesional, productive, high IQ labours respect theirself and do not play dirty games. They are in better position from the migrants but they stuck in the second stage from the bottom!!. There is a small number of professional labours who have high position and deserve it but this happen only when the labours come from an other company.
Re: The voice of a migrant
Of interest to migrants who may be more likely to read this article .
Part of the financial crisis in the US has spilled over to the construction industry.
http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Global_Economy/JA03Dj04.html
"What Americans do know is that they have jobs. At 4.7% the US unemployment rate is still very low, just 0.3% off the low for this cycle set in March, 2006. Former US president Harry Truman once said that Americans define a recession as a neighbor losing their job, a depression as them losing their own jobs. By that measure, with American employment still strong, Americans just don't see that much urgency in cutting back spending.
Americans feel more secure if they see the headline unemployment number still low. A factor that is probably artificially keeping the employment numbers rosy is the fact that the layoffs in the US construction industry don't really show up in US employment numbers.
That is because it has been an unacknowledged but obvious fact that, for most of this decade, the boom in US real estate construction has been populated by America's signature reserve army of the unemployed, its undocumented, primarily Hispanic, illegal alien workforce. These workers weren't really counted among the officially employed during the boom, and, as housing construction employment now evaporates, they're not now counted as among the unemployed in the bust. (I wrote on the phenomenon of illegal immigrants building US housing in my March 29, 2007 ATol piece Exurbia-built on paradox and hypocrisy.) The hard-working builders of America's homes and hearths are proving to be as disposable as tissue paper, which, if you ever talk to the immigrants themselves, pretty much sums up how they feel America always saw them in the first place."
In australia the migrants will be the first to be laid off too.
The bulding industry in spain already faces collapse .'Pyetor the plumber" and labourer from Poland has lost his job.
Re: The voice of a migrant
The migrants know from experience that they will be the first who will lose their job, they know that they are on the top of the list for redundancy. We know it and we have many proves in our hands. The question is not if we will be the victims but why the migrants do not use their power, their numbers as voters to improve their position. In Australia, USA, Canada, there many migrants, citizens of these countries and they could create huge problems to any party that ignore their rights. We (migrants, non Anglo Saxon ) are about 42-45% from Australian population and most of us are Australian citizens, 93% of Greek migrants are Australian citizens. The migrants are enough strong but they ignore their power, they are not organized and they are not ready to fight for their rights.
I try with various ways to tell them to undertake their responsibilities, I try to tell the migrants that it is time to create their organizations, that it is time to prepare to fight for their rights.
Re: The voice of a migrant
These migrant people you are talking about are part of the old migrant system who gained some rights as citizens .The 407 visa system at 70,000 a year shows that we are now creating a new type of 'guest worker" for labour importation .Indentured labour has no real rights only the right to be deported .As with the ilegal hispanic (mexicans etc)I n the US imperialist economy.A labour aristocracy with rights now exists and an exploited underclass with no real rights.
Re: The voice of a migrant
These migrants from the old system are victims of race discrimination, victims of humiliation, victims of bulliing and luck of equal opportunities. The libanese migrants who returned back to Lebanon was Australian citizens, none leave the Australia paradise to go in a country with so many problems, except if the Australian paradise is a hell for many Australian and they prefered to return back to countries as the Libanon !! The migrants in Cronoula Beach was second or third ganeration migrants and Australian citizens but they have little hope for a better future. I speak for 8.000.000 Australian citizens with discrimination problems. I do not speak only for working class I speak for victims of discriminations or for person whose family members had this kind of problems. The big problem for the Union is with the Australian citizens from non Agglo-Saxon background because we started to ask for our rights we started to ask to end the privileges from the dominant race, we started to ask for equal opportunities and not for empty words and meangless smiles!!
And the worst of all, or the best of all we started to prepare to fight for our rights.
About the new migrants and their rights I do not know many things but I heard some bad stories against the temporary migrants, very bad working conditions and I wrote a letter in the Union in Greek language, my egglish are bad as you know and asked the Union to take the employer to the court for descrimination and violation of migrants rights according to international law. (poor egglish). I found my letter in the website of the Union. I do not know what the Union have done but I think the Union has many reasons to stop this kind of working conditions and probably they are doing something to solve this problem.
