Who discovered Australia ?

Many people forget that terra australis or Australia is in fact a Italian word meaning great south land, the fifth continent, land of the holy spirit, before the dutch or the british ever ventured here venetian sailors came to Australia & met the local inhabitants being the aboriginals, this occured in 1450, the italian mariners ventured back to Italy & gave the news to Pope Alexander, because italy was often a ally to spain & spoke similar languages, Pope Alexander annexed terra australis as the property of Spain & one must wonder if the british & spainish wars was actually fought because Pope Alexander gave the fifth continent to Spain, after many years of fighting the spainish armada was badly disabled & the british would declare that the fifth continent would be be a british colony not a spainish colony, Pope Alexander was furious & one must wonder if the church of England broke away from their Roman catholic founders just about the same time as Australia was discovered by italian mariners.

I knew that

Everybody knows that Australias first policeman was in fact a italian man & their were italian convicts as well as british convicts & the only way a asian person  could migrate to Australia in the early days of colonisation was if they approached the italian or british embassies for a passport.

the answer is....

Aboriginal people! Yes, they were here 10's of thousands of years before any European 'discover'.

latin not Italian.

Isn't Terra Australis latin?

latin is old italian, the

latin is old italian, the modern italian language only began to be spoken about 3 to 4 hundred years ago, just as Gaelic is old english, lating is old italian.

Re: latin is old italian, the

i love u soo much

Gaelic?

Gaelic is not old English, it is a completely different language. The common ancestor tongue is several thousands of years old.

Latin is the parent language of Italian, but it is also the parent language of Spanish, French and Romanian (among others) and Terra Australis is definately a Latin term, meaning Southern Land. The concept itself dates back to Aristotle.

As for your suggestion that Australia is responsible for the creation of the Church of England, I suggest you google Henry VIII.

it was a good read tho

...being Irish descent (re Gaelic lineage which I too understood as quite separate to the English which is why it was not tolerated, interesting too that Ireland 'only' had human presence for say 10K years after the last big ice age),

1/8 Italian (thus interested in the naming issue)

and my guess the use of Latin was not so much deference to Italy but to the international language of the Roman Catholic church? or international learning of bygone era, similar to the scientific naming of animals and plants?

Just guessing, never studied history as such.

Muslims first discovered and mapped the Australia

In fact Australia was first discovered and mapped by Muslims of 9th and 10th centuries.

"The map of the Sea of Java of Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi 820 CE shows Cape Yorke Pensinsula, a "V" shaped Gulf of Carpentaria and a curved Arnhem Land. A later map, that of Abu Isak Al-Farisi Istakhari 934 CE, also includes an outline of the northern coast of Australia."

Sheiky Story

Mad Sheik Hilaly said the same thing...

See http://forums.muslimvillage.net/lofiversion/index.php/t3388.html which reprints the Telegraph article and is followed by the usual Islamic conspiracy theories about Jews and the government.

However, there is no recorded history of Muslim settlement in Australia prior to
1860, when Afghan camelmen came to the outback and worked bloody hard to open up the Australian interior for an overland railway

They would sheik shake their heads at some of their successors.

Re: Sheiky Story

Just came across this and as a descendant of said 'Afghans' ( we are 1/2 Indian and Arab actually) i certainly detest the extreme Muslim views of this generation. I come from a long line of Muslim Holy men who were pure and gentle. NEVER violent or inciting of hate. I became a Christian Minister and am proud of my heritage.

Re: Muslims first discovered and mapped the Australia

One must wonder about people like Anthony Mundine and his affiliation with Islam, was Australia a ancient Islamic country, did the aboriginals migrate to the middle east & build the ancient civilisations of Iraq & maybe even India or the Indus civilisations ??? Why do aboriginal kids like to sniff petrol ??? One must wonder if the aboriginal language & arabic language, Hindi, Tamil or Indian language have alot of similarities. Who knows some say Aboriginals came here from South India 2000 years ago some even say aboriginals have been here alot longer than that & maybe they migrated to Iraq & India & started those ancient civilisations, they might of even been responsible for the building of the Pyramids in Egypt. Some say the entire cattle export industry & maybe even sheep export industry is all managed & done by aboriginals or half-casts ! They were good hunters & gatherers & maybe they adopted well to farming more so than europeans. Who knows what secrets they hold & if they had secrets they woudn't share them, especially with forigners like europenas. I wouldnt be surprised if a aboriginal would not let you do any farm work if you had blonde hair maybe they want blondes or white australians to drive cars instead. And if the petrol was to run out the whites would all be dead.

The great southern land.

It is also believed that the Portugese discovered Australia. And what about the Aborigines they were the first on the land. Does it really matter? Who discovered Australia?

It was the muslims

I am pretty sure the Muslims mapped Australia before anyone else in the 9th and 10th centuries.

The answer can be framed by noting who the 'discovering' was being done for.

Captain Cook discovered Australia for the British Empire in 1770 if my history is up to speed.

Other Europeans like the Dutch and Portugeuse almost certainly discovered Australia for their counties in the 17C (early mid 1600's) but their visits didn't last long.

It is likely Javanese and other islander peoples to the north discovered Australia many centuries or even thousands of years before that to trade with local Aborigines.

Some people argue the Chinese and Muslim Peoples have discovered Australia too many centuries ago but records are uncertain or still being discussed for their true meaning.

Local Aborigines discovered a land mass that became Australia (after sea level changes) at least 40,000 years ago determined by scientific dating techniques, and maybe even 60,000 years ago. They were definitely the first humans to discover Australia. They are therefore called the First Australians.

Re: Who discovered Australia ?

omg no1 cares bou this site and every1 no's that the english discovered australia

no1 ?!

Fuck, it would be good if you could manage something like standard
English. 'Don't even got there'? What does that mean? 'no's'? Do you
mean KNOWS?

No-one cares about you either, dillbrain.

Trepang

It is interesting to note that Indonesian fishermen visited northern
Australia for hundreds of years hunting sea cucumber. They were mainly
Macassans (from South Sulawesi). They called the sea cucumber
'trepang'. This trade is known to have definitely been happening from
1720 and involved significant contact with Aborigines. It is believed
many Aboriginal people today in the North have Macassan ancestry.

Aboriginals are Tamils from Sri Lanka and South India

The current Aboriginal occupation of this country only dates back about 2500 years.

These people who we refer to as Aboriginals today are actually Tamils and they all but killed off all of the original indigenous people. Tamil migration to this land mass lasted for about 1000 years.

Re: Who discovered Australia ?

The Dutch discovered Australia because they were riding the Roaring Forties for years before the Portugese and Captain Cook!  It was by accident but they still found it first.

P.S - to that girl who says this site sucks, log off and grow a brain.

P.P.S - The person who replied to her should learn to express themselves without swearing!  We are 14 y.o impressionable kids and we didn't even know that word existed!!  Geez!

Re: Who discovered Australia ?

You guys sound really smart!  I bet you're teacher is cool and super smart!  I think you've got it spot on and I find the swearing and bad attitudes offensive
