Australia will fail in its responsibilities to reduce its own greenhouse gas emissions unless it matches its commitment to halt logging of forests overseas with an end to logging of old growth forests in Tasmania and Victoria, The Wilderness Society said today.

“Recognising that logging and deforestation is a massive problem overseas is welcome. However failing to reduce the greenhouse emissions from forestry operations in Australia will signal a failure by the Prime Minister to help combat global climate change. Getting our own house in order should be a priority,” Sean Cadman, National Forest Campaign Co-ordinator for TWS, said.

The Australia Greenhouse Office has identified Australian forestry operations as generating in excess of 30 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year. These are very conservative figures as recent research has shown losses as high as 1200 tonnes of carbon from a single hectare is some Tasmanian forests, Mr Cadman said.
