Shooting the village explainers
Posted December 16th, 2007 by AnonymousThere's a large agenda of work, and I'd much rather have the public service hard at work over the summer rather than down at Batemans Bay with you folks.
Kevin Rudd (speaking to Caucus).
Every so often Joadja and I escape to the old shack at Possum Point that dad built in 1949. A couple of years later he
was killed training Bluey Crabtree's greyhounds at the old Nelligan racetrack. The cops said it was an accident, of course, and there wasn't much left of dad after the dogs had finished with him.
Democracy vs. universal suffrage [author invites comment]
Posted August 17th, 2007 by AnonymousDemocracy as we know it works like this. Two million wolves and eight million sheep vote on who shall decide what to eat. Meanwhile the "liberal" media, in which the wolves are the biggest shareholders and the biggest advertisers, are full of reports and advertisements alleging that vegetarianism among wolves would harm the sheep by raising the price of fodder, but don't mention the maverick spotted sheep who says it is better to pay more for fodder than to be eaten.

Will One Joint Really Make You Schizoid?
Posted July 31st, 2007 by AnonymousMaia Szalavitz, July 30, 2007
Just what did a new study on marijuana and schizophrenia actually say - and what did the media leave out?
Watching the media cover marijuana is fascinating, offering deep insight into conventional wisdom, bias and failure to properly place science in context. The coverage of a new study claiming that marijuana increases the risk of later psychotic illnesses like schizophrenia by 40% displays many of these flaws.

news.com.au wrongly reports Haneef "conviction"
Posted July 18th, 2007 by AnonymousCheck out the caption in the photo at http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,22093752-2,00.html -- as long as the link still works!
I took a screen shot of the offending page at 6.23am and submitted a comment on the story, drawing attention to the error, at 6.33am. By 3.53pm, the offending story had been replaced by an alternative story (with a different URL) on the "National | Federal" page. But the offending page had been neither pulled nor corrected.

Haneef charge now redundant
Posted July 17th, 2007 by AnonymousYesterday I argued that the charge against Dr Mohamed Haneef was unconstitutional. Today the Minister for Immigration, by an executive decision, has rendered that point moot. More: http://bushlawyer.blogspot.com/2007/07/haneef-so-much-for-separation-of-powers.html.

Tim Dunlop's Blogocracy
Posted July 16th, 2007 by AnonymousLast week became official: News Limited really limits your news!
Posted July 16th, 2007 by AnonymousThe whole saga only developed las week, on Wednesday and Thursday, after they actually threatened "to go" blogger Peter Brent, from http://www.mumble.com.au , and Charles Richardson (from Crikey) who had both been quite effective and meticulous in their critical dissecting of The Australian's analysis and opinion pieces, especially regarding The Australian's interpretation of polling data. Next, the Blog Wars between the Mainstream Media (MSM) and the Oz Blogosphere escalated to unseen polemical heights.
Shock Jock Horror: Fairfax buys 2UE and 3AW
Posted July 5th, 2007 by AnonymousTo say the Fairfax and Macquarie acquisition of Southern Cross Broadcasting is causing consternation among the shock-jocks at Sydney's 2UE and Melbourne's 3AW is an understatement. For far too long, the intellectual anorexics who have dominated commercial radio in Sydney and Melbourne have been able to pursue their one dimensional reactionary agendas without opposition. It is heartening to note on completion of the purchase, Fairfax will acquire sole control of Sydney's 2UE, Melbourne's 3AW and talkback stations in Brisbane and Perth.
Venezuela: The case of RCTV and the fictional democratization of communication
Posted June 10th, 2007 by Anonymous* The Collective of “El Libertario”, Venezuelan anarchist newspaper, makes public its reasoned out position in the debate generated by the case of RCTV, in where the current government imposes a solution where we pass from the meanness that the capitalistic private oligopoly of TV to the dreadful that could be the monopoly of a bureaucratic and authoritarian state.
