Strata unit clothes drying law is greenhouse silliness
Posted March 9th, 2008 by Anonymous
NSW
unit and townhouse dwellers are being forced to contribute to global
warming by a state government law that encourages body corporates to
ban the hanging of washing where it can be seen, according to Greens
NSW MP John Kaye.
Commenting on a story on page 8 of today's
Sun-Herald, Dr Kaye said: "Residents without the opportunity to hang
their laundry out to dry are left with no alternative but to use
electric dryers.
"While natural sunshine provides free solar
power to dry clothes, the average electric-powered unit is responsible
for almost a half a tonne of carbon dioxide each year.

Housing Crisis, Australian Style
Posted July 5th, 2007 by Anonymous
It has taken a decade for Federal and State governments to realise that Australia is in the midst of a housing crisis. Only 33% of Australians own their own home; another 35% are paying off soaring mortgages, while 28% live in rental accommodation (mainly in the private sector). Public housing is now only available to people in dire straits, people on low and modest incomes are expected to find housing in the private rental market. It is not unusual for people renting in Australia to have to pay over 50% of their income on rent.

Historic "Regentville", Heritage Listed House, Permitted by Wollongong Council to be Destroyed
Posted May 22nd, 2007 by AnonymousI first set eyes on "Regentville" at the age of two, shortly after my grandparents, the Mitchells, built a home on Mount Ousley. From there, you can see the ocean for miles, and the mountains are so close you feel you can can almost reach out and touch them. My grandmother used to take me to the sitting room upstairs at night and show me the fairy lights of the city, and the lights of the ships out to sea.
From that age, whenever I visited my grandparents, I'd be taken for a walk to the park, and we'd go past the magnificent mansion, built in 1883 at 9 Macarthur Avenue, the name of which had been changed during the 20th Century to Strone House.
I loved that house. All my life I dreamed of one day owning it.
