Japan G8 repression: Independent journalists detained

On June 27, three Hong Kong citizen journalists who have been registered with the Citizens’ Media Center (Sapporo) in Japan were detained by Immigration, and were on the verge of being deported. The following morning, Susan George (ATTAC France) was stopped and questioned at the airport. Ms George is 74 years old, and her detention demonstrates a lack of humanity on the part of authorities. Protest and Repression is escalating because the G8 is taking place in Japan, between the 7th and 9th of July in Hokkaido.

Sea Shepherd launch Operation Musashi at International Whaling Commission

Skye Bortoli of Australian Teens Against Whaling has described the 60th International Whaling Commission meeting in Chile as pathetic saying “this body will be known in the future as a small group of ecologically arrogant people who are condemning the world’s whales to agony and oblivion for petty politics and a few lousy bucks.”

Sea Shepherd rebuked by IWC as Rumours emerge of Compromise on Whaling

Reports
from the International Whaling Commission 3 day intercessional meeting
in London say that commercial whaling may be allowed but the scientific
loophole which has allowed Japan to whale in the Antarctic may be
closed. This would allow Japan to whale commercially in the north
Pacific regulated by the IWC. The meeting also rebuked Sea Shepherd
over "Safety at Sea".

have confronted the whaling factory ship, Nisshin Maru in the Southern
Ocean Whale Sanctuary between 0800 and 1000 Hours on March 3, 175 miles
off the Antarctic Banzare Coast inside the Australian Economic
Exclusion Zone. During the confrontation the Sea Shepherd crew threw
bottles of rotten butter (Butyric acid) and a 'slippery chemical' onto
the decks of the whaling ship. (Sea Shepherd Video report)

Protesting Whaling at the Japanese Consulate

People gathered outside the Japanese consulate in Melbourne on January 3 to protest against the Japanese whaling fleet slaughtering whales in the southern ocean. At the centre of the crowd was Jamie Yew from Animal Liberation Victoria dyed red on the Japanese flag with the red sun dripping "blood", symbolic of the whale slaughter.

Animal Liberation targets Japanese Consulate over Whaling

Ten activists from Animal Liberation Victoria poured fake blood over themselves in a protest at the Japanese Consulate in Melbourne on December 27. Dressed in white body suits and carrying signs saying "Ban Whaling" the activists walked into the consulate on the 45th floor of the Melbourne Central Building on Elizabeth Street to send a strong message to the Japanese Government over whaling in the Southern Ocean whaling Sanctuary.

Whaling Protests continue despite Reprieval for Humpbacks

The Japanese Government has announced a suspension of the slaughter of 50 humpback whales due to increasing worldwide attention on the Japanese commercial whaling operation masquerading as a scientific expedition. The United States brokered the deal, which Japan agreed to conditionally that the International Whaling Commission (IWC) reinstates its original task of whale resource management. Japan still intends to continue to kill 50 endangered Fin whales and 935 piked (minke) whales this season.
