AKBAYAN (Citizens' Action Party) Rep. Risa Hontiveros condemned in the strongest terms the bombing that took place inside Batasan complex, calling the attack a horrible assault on the institution itself. Well, I’m sure the bombers will be delighted that Mr Howard wants them to meet their 72 virgins apiece (or is it only 70?) without delay. The fact that they’re not really going to meet any virgins is irrelevant, because deterrence is a matter of perception, not reality.
For terrorists who want to be “martyrs”, the most effective deterrent is life imprisonment, whereas death looks like a reward. If Mr Howard would rather give them the latter, he is encouraging terrorists.
