NSW Government Challenged To Deliver Public Transport Additions Before 2010 Elections

The president of National Roads and Cyclists Association, Mr Alan Odds today called on the NRMA to stop inflaming the ongoing war between motorists and cyclists with their claim that cyclists do not belong on main roads in peak hour. Referring to the interview with NRMA president Alan Evans on ABC Radio's PM program this evening, Mr Odds said, “It would appear that NRMA policy, as articulated by its president, Alan Evans, is that cyclists should not be on main roads in peak hour Sydney because the mix of motorists and cyclists is unsafe.”

New rail links across the north western suburbs to Castle Hill,
from Hurstville to Strathfield and high speed links to Newcastle,
the Central Coast and Wollongong are among eight major rail projects
to be built in Sydney by 2010.

The Minister for Transport, Mr Carl Scully, said Action for Transport
2010 would invest $2.6 billion in major extensions to the CityRail
network, which would open up public transport to thousands of Sydneysiders
for the first time.

Strip down and ride on for the environment this March. The next World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) in Australia will commence at high noon at the Archibald Fountain in Sydney’s Hyde Park on Saturday the 8th of March 2008.

The ride will be the first of 6 rides occuring in Australia on the same weekend, including Adelaide, Byron Bay, Brisbane, Newcastle and Melbourne. Other cities across the world will also host rides as part of the southern hemisphere leg of WNBR's global movement, including Lima (Peru), Golden Bay (New Zealand) Pretoria (South Africa) and Buenos Aires (Argentina).

The President of the National Roads and Cyclists Association, Mr Alan
Odds, today called on the car insurance industry to insure bicycles
against collision damage.

Referring to AAMI research that almost half - 47 per cent - of
Victorian car drivers have had a close call with a cyclist, Mr Odds
said that said, "There is a real need for this cover and it is long
overdue."
