The Australian Greens are calling on the Prime Minister to make a statement in support of the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples when he addresses the UN General Assembly this week.

 

"This is a one-off opportunity to show a new face of Australian politics when Kevin Rudd addresses the United Nations," said Senator Rachel Siewert today.

Australia’s PM must endorse Indigenous Declaration at UN in NY

If Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, hopes Australia is invited to take a place on the UN Security Council then his government must first show the world that it will end racial discrimination and keep its promise to Indigenous Peoples, by endorsing the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples during his imminent address to the General Assembly.

Aboriginal Delegation takes NT Intervention to the United Nations

The Chairperson of the National Aboriginal Alliance, Mr Sol Bellear, today announced that an Aboriginal Delegation to United Nations will raise many of the repressive aspects of the NT Intervention at the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

Anti-intervention campaigner joins UN delegation

Barbara Shaw, a prominent spokeswoman against the NT intervention, will join a delegation of more than forty Indigenous people from Australia attending the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in New York.

Ms Shaw is a resident of Mt Nancy Town Camp, an area "proscribed" under the intervention. She will use the trip to strengthen support for the campaign demanding repeal of all NT intervention legislation.

Confirmation by the Foreign Affairs Minister, Stephen Smith, that Australia would acknowledge the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, is commonsense and a return to international political reality, said Les Malezer today.
