Vehicle Road Rage Against Sydney Cyclist
Posted November 2nd, 2007 by takver
"Here am beeped by a black van. When I catch up 20 seconds later, I ask
whats the problem. He's busy talking on a phone (hand free) so we trade
hand signals. I fake a spit on he car, and ride off. 2 minutes later he
uses his horn again, cuts me off (I slap the side of his van). He turns
the corner, gets out and we have a standoff (he is to close for the
camera)."

I do not consider it a good idea to try to talk to motorists. All that can do is provoke worse road rage. I drive a car but nonetheless I have come across arseholes who want me off the road completely, and no doubt they want me to crash and burn.
You are far from alone on your bicycle missions and road rage. Road rage serves as quite a deterrent to bicycle use. In America you pretty well have to be either dedicated or desperate in order to take your life in your hands and use a bicycle for a commuting mission. More power to you! When I say "dedicated" or "desperate" I absolutely mean it.
So far, mosy bicycle users are "dedicated" in America, but given Peak Oil, that will surely change. What will happen is that lots of people will get desperate to make that commuting mission and use a bicycle. In America, public transit will break down due to poor funding. In America we are not yet at the US$/litre petrol level yet. BRING IT ON! While driving, I burn up about 2 litres each way, but an enemy of mine burns at least 12 litres each way. As petrol goes over a buck a litre, that idiot will be forced off the road due to the mission to work being brutally expensive.
There are people in America who live awful far from a workplace. With many people driving vehicles with poor fuel economy, that long commute can get to where the petrol becomes a large fraction of their take-home pay. At some point they must give it up. The people with long commuting missions will be impacted first as petrol prices climb like a jet plane on steroids. And yes, the airlines are getting bit good with the price of the jet fuel. HINT: The commodities futures price of heating oil or diesel is in lockstep with the price of jet fuel as all three fuels are virtually one and the same. In the US Navy, one and the same can be used to to feed boilers in ships, run the diesel-driven liberty boats, and run the Tomcats getting slingshotted off the carriers.
dont get mad get even
much better solutions that i used during my bike courier days:
1. d lock to the side window
2. side mirror smash with bar ends
3. glue/ paint on the windscreen
4. bleach on the paintwork
5. CALTROPS!!!!!
6. my personal favourite - spring loaded blades under mountain biking leg armour - sharp enough to slash tires.
7. super load footy horn
Re: dont get mad get even
I really would not recommend bike rage as any answer to road rage. It just increases bike abuse. Recommend a campaign of helmet cameras. Record it and post it. Send to the media. The more the better. Change is on the way. Report it to the police. sure they don't respond but if there's enough then things will also have to change.
Re: Vehicle Road Rage Against Sydney Cyclist
Pfft. You cyclists are a special breed of isiot. Riding along at 5kmh in the middle of a lane on main arterial road. F%$ing idiots.
The footpath was good enough when he needed to skip the traffic lights yet when he is blocking traffic because he is too unfit to ride faster the footpath is no good. You dont pay to use the road so stay off of it
Re: Vehicle Road Rage Against Sydney Cyclist
I own a car and a push bike, I ride on the road and i pay my TAC within my car registration. My registration goes towards road construction and the up keep of roads. Roads are there for all to use. If you don't like to share then don't drive!
P.S. He got on the footpath to get around the idiot in the car!
Re: Vehicle Road Rage Against Sydney Cyclist
Of course, the guy in the car is an idiot. However, I can see where lots of the frustration and anger from car drivers comes from. Being Dutch, I am used to cycle through busy cities, however, gave up in Sydney after three accidents in three weeks. Car drivers just don’t see you. I ride a motorbike now, and often witness bicycle riders brake traffic rules. They don’t wait for red lights and cycle on the foot path. When I asked a cycler once why she didn’t wait for the light to turn green the answer was "you are just jealous!". "Of what?" I asked her, "for braking the law?". I can run red lights too on my motorbike, or even take the foot path. But I don’t. Even the cycler in the video decides to take the foot path because he doesn’t want to wait for the light. I could have done the same on my motor bike. Even a small car can do this. What will happen to the world if we all start doing this?Again, the guy in the car is an idiot. Still, as a cycler you have you right to slap the car. In a way I believe that you did ask for this reaction. If you don’t like this reaction, you should not have engaged the guy at the light. In my eyes you are just as much an idiot for engaging the road rage.
Anyway, enough of my lecture :) enjoy the cycling!
Re: Vehicle Road Rage Against Sydney Cyclist
agreed. we can't complain if we are the same. Non violent protest is the way to go. Get active.
